The Neural Advantage of Speaking 2 Languages

Posted January 22, 2010 8:15 AM

From Scientific American:

The ability to speak a second language isn't the only thing that distinguishes bilingual people from their monolingual counterparts--their brains work differently, too. Research has shown, for instance, that children who know two languages more easily solve problems that involve misleading cues.

Therefore with 11 official languages South Africa should not have any unsolved problems. But . .

The ability to solve problems is purely depending on individuals memory skills, data interpretation, retrieval and recollection and correlating analytical skills of the individual. It is based on practice, inclination, interest and relevance to the person regarding the problem.

What could be agreed is those who are used multilingual usage are used to correlation retrieval system of the brain and have better chances of problem solving.

If one is used to thinking, problem solving aspects and add learning skills with open mindedness without biased prejudices- all of us can solve problems. It is more connected to usage of the brain faculty without getting rusted.

As per some early report on our minimal utilization of our brain power seems realistic. It is like keeping an engine unused and testing for performance suddenly.

No doubt it is wonderful area of research and one criteria is the willingness of the brain owners to strain and storm.

Multilingual understanding can add to better communication levels and improved sociable and allied multiple benefit to the user. There seems to be regional route languages like Greek,Latin or Sanskrit from which other languages have derivations and localized changes. The route words mean the same in all languages.

Dear OP

I read and write two languages fluently. A third I speak only and this assists me in Italian Restaurants. A fourth language for me is music, which has tremendous influence on my learning and cognitive responses, abilities. Although I can hardly read or write music I still use it as a way to guide me through all kinds of circumstances, problems or challenges.

Like, if I wanted to find or integrate something like a correct size bolt or other crude hardware, I would listen to "Hells Bells" by ACDC or something similar. Cleaning a car or changing a gear box, in that kind of situation.

If I had difficulties understanding complicated mechanical dependencies I would listen to Beethoven or Mozart and would be better able to comprehend and build on my understanding assisted by the mathematical beauty of it all.

When it comes to formulas or algorithms Bach would be on the cards and for some reason all falls into place. Calculators become obsolete, or at least to a significant degree. Some synapses seem to operate better when kindled by music for some reason, at least for me. I'm sure most of us have similar symbioses going on.

And now to Jimi Hendrix, a visionary and still very underrated genius of the 20th century. His boldness and total freedom, achieved through virtuosity and free spirit, (and drugs, I know) make me see things in a different light. Simply inspiring. Not every ones favorite but I suppose most have their own "Jimi" aid, if only subconsciously.

Any skill, not only language, is good for the brains. The better one becomes at "it" the easier it is to pick up the next language or skill. If you have never played Chess or Go or read the I Ging (etc, etc.) then one should do it as soon as possible. The broader the road one travels, the more traffic it can handle.

"And they also say it's impossible for man to breath under water."

"Cross town traffic, so hard to get through to you."

"And castles made of sand swift into the sea, eventually."

What a man, Ky.

Music is a language.

European classical music (Mozart, Beethoven, Chopin, etc.) is a known aid to academic subject study, which indicates that there must be a link between this sort of input and the "tuning" of receptors in the brain to accumulate and process information.

It has uses elsewhere; the Docklands Light Railway in London, for instance, pipes it through the public address systems at stations occasionally as a vehicle for making the more violent and disruptive members of society take their business elsewhere.
