No Place for Screens?

Posted February 07, 2010 9:02 AM

Automakers want us to have internet-connected dashboard computers. Should drivers be able to check their Facebook pages while on the highway? Do you find yourself texting, talking, or otherwise distracted while driving? Car makers are giving drivers Internet access because (they say) that's what drivers want, and are using heads-up displays and voice-activated commands to try and make it safer. But when your family is on the highway, do you really want the marginal driver in the next car to be online?

The preceding article is a "sneak peek" from Display Technologies, a newsletter from GlobalSpec. To stay up-to-date and informed on industry trends, products, and technologies, subscribe to Display Technologies today.

Sure they can have it, but it only operates when the cars are not being driven. You have to realize, That driving a car is a privilege, with others like yourself on the road and one is being distracted enough just driving, And don't cry about HUD, You are not a fighter pilot.

The only accessories that should be added are the ones to assist them to drive. And not assist them so they can focus on something else other than driving.

You do not have to be a marginal driver to your are distracted. Whether you are marginal or a very good driver. When both of you are distracted you are the same. Poor drivers......always.

What I have always wanted was a full electronic instrument panel that could be reconfigured for a number of custom gauge looks and layouts.

As far as Internet access who are the retards that think thats more important than driving? We have far too many drivers now that cant seem to keep focused on the road as is. This will only make it worse. If they want internet access while commuting buy a public transportation pass and use a wireless card on a laptop.

To me they should put that as an option on the sheet you fill out when ordering a new vehicle though. Everyone who goes to buy a new vehicle and marks the box next to the internet access dashboard option gets their drivers license taken away for 5 years.

It should also be a mandatory option when you renew your drivers licence. Give people an option for an electronic internet access dashboard to be installed in their vehicle at the time of the licence renewal. Anyone who checks it gets an automatic fail and cannot retest for five years.

Those two things alone would probably reduce traffic accidents by 80% in the next two years just because 90% of the idiots on the road who don't pay enough attention now just opted to eliminate themselves and take public transportation methods.

Considering the intuitiveness an accuracy of predicting driver needs in the automotive industry and after totaling the pro's & cons the equation deliberates upon the realization this scheme contends with logic though may well line the pockets of the most undeserving.

If it were not for the fact that it would endanger innocent people, I would say let them have it and let natural selection take it's tole.

Put all controls not contributing to driving safely out of reach of the driver. Problem solved.

Having three speeding tickets because I didn't notice the cameras, gone through a traffic light while red, and found myself turning in the opposite direction lane (There was no traffic on the road at 12:00 in the night, apart from me and the police car) and being on the verge of disqualification.

Yet I would still be tempted to log on the internet and check directions on google earth, or look on my facebook/email messages for the directions my friend has sent me to his/her house. Not to mention internet radio and why not, check out those youtube videoclips when you are waiting on traffic.

I do not think I would get out of my car alive if I had internet access readily available.

I would place using the internet while driving in the same category as texting while driving, talking on the cell phone without an earpiece - while driving, women putting on make-up while driving (even men putting on make-up while driving....(politically correct????)) and being drunk while driving; and, driving 55 mph in the fast lane. They all add danger to the highway.

If I have to text, I just pull over and stop. I text my daughter before I get in the car and tell her not to text me, unless it's an emergency. To help enforce my policy I make she has enough money. Why, then, would she text me? Do I have control of what?

Best Regards
