Cancer Warnings for Cell Phones

Posted December 31, 2009 8:45 AM

First, the important point: lots of people believe lots of different things, but nobody has proof. I'm not talking about life after death; I'm talking about whether cell phones cause brain tumors. Unlike questions of spirituality, this is the sort of question that science can answer, eventually. But brain cancer develops slowly, and cell phones haven't been in use for very long. Also, the technology has been changing during that time, and many other environmental factors can confuse the issue. While scientists study the subject, politicians in Maine and San Francisco aren't waiting. They argue that cell phones should carry warnings concerning possible brain cancer. Is this responsible government? Or is the push for warnings merely political grandstanding without facts to stand on?

"Is this responsible government? Or is the push for warnings merely political grandstanding without facts to stand on?"

Everything is more likely to give you cancer in California.

As you stated, there are no conclusive and credible studies that can provide a link. So, obviously, there is nothing of substance to back up a warning.

Yes, this is responsible government; in a way. Government wants to be responsible (but not liable) for everything in your life and citizens are becoming more willing to award that responsibility to a central agency (power) for the low price of liberty (which many seem to no longer hold in high regard).

Should the government be taking on this role? I think not. I think that citizens should take more responsibility for their lives and actions, but I appear to be in a growing minority, so why listen to me?

*I think that citizens should take more responsibility for their lives and actions

You might be a redneck if you hold that point of view an count me in too.

You Might Be a Redneck...a different take

We have enjoyed the redneck
jokes for years. It's time to

take a reflective look at the
core beliefs of a culture that
values home, family, country
and God. If I had to stand
before a dozen terrorists
who threaten my life, I'd
choose a half dozen or so
rednecks to back me up.
Tire irons, squirrel guns
and grit --
that's what rednecks are
made of. I hope I am one
of those. If you feel the
same, pass this on to your
redneck friends.
Y'all know who ya are

You might be a redneck if:
It never occurred to you to
be offended by the phrase,

'One nation, under God.'

You might be a redneck if:
You've never protested about seeing the 10

Commandments posted in

public places.

You might be a redneck if:
You still say ' Christmas'

instead of 'Winter Festival.'

You might be a redneck if:
You bow your head when someone prays.

You might be a redneck if:
You stand and place your

hand over your heart when

they play the National Anthem

You might be a redneck if:
You treat our armed forces

veterans with great respect,

and always have.

You might be a redneck if:
You've never burned an

American flag, nor intend to.

You might be a redneck if:
You know what you believe

and you aren't afraid to say

so, no matter who is listening.

You might be a redneck if:
You respect your elders and

raised your kids to do the same.

You might be a redneck if:
You'd give your last dollar to

a friend.

I believe that
you, like me, have just enough

Red Neck in you to have the

same beliefs as those talked

about.

God Bless the USA !

Keep the fire burning,
redneck friend.

I'm a redneck (former coal miner) except I pray to the Holy Spirit or Great Spirit. So much of our representative government and division of powers was based on the Great Law of the Iroquois - too bad the founding fathers neglected the councils of women. Although the first of the commandments sounds ethnocentric, certainly many people have adapted it to their own experience. The second sounds quaint until you consider that currency is graven images, otherwise the commandments are general enough they shouldn't offend anyone. And I don't put my hand over my heart - I like to sing. (Some may prefer I put my hand over my mouth.)

AH,

GA!!.

Personally, I am concerned long term affects of cell phone use. While I am in the middle of my life (I hope) and using a cell phone may not have enough time to cause me much harm, my children (should they live to 70 or 80) have a long way to go. Therefore I do not let them use a cell phone. They are still younger than 10, so I'm curious how I am going to ward off their eventual unrelenting requests for a cell phone once they hit their teens. I am not willing to leave their well-being up to the government....which is getting more and more difficult.

What most people don't know who use a cell phone is that the cell phone is a radio tranceiver that operates in the 800 -900 MHz region. As an licensed ham radio hobbyist, I am aware of the hazards of using these frequencies with any amount of power. The FCC has published safety levels for power at different frequencies. The limit of power considered safe decreases with frequency starting around 300 MHz for any given distance from the antenna. The reason is that the human body becomes somewhat of a resonant antenna at these frequencies and so is more affected by them. I operate in the VHF and lower UHF and keep my power below 50 watts (5 watts) with my antenna at least 15 feet away from my operating postion.

OK, so a cell phone does not put out 50 watts. It's transmitting antenna, however, is right next to your head so the amount of power that could possibly be damaging can be quite a bit lower. The standard for safe emission is given in uv/meter (I believe).

Since like you say, cell phones are a fairly new item we use these days, it may take a while to see if they really are a cancer cause.
