Driven to Distraction?

Posted February 27, 2010 8:01 AM

My car has a video screen in the dashboard that provides information on gas consumption, outside temperature, battery charge, and what song is playing on the radio. It's a nice 'bell-and-whistle' for car sellers, but a potentially deadly distraction for drivers. Now imagine dealing with traffic while being Rickrolled: at the Consumer Electronics Show in January, automakers showed Internet-connected computers in the dashboard. Safety advocates are not amused. CBS News describes the potential for distracted driving, and the Washington Post is even blunter. The highway is not the place to check Facebook. Flashy dashboard displays are a killer app — but not in a good way. Should there be limits on dashboard displays?

My car has a video screen in the dashboard that provides information on gas consumption, outside temperature, battery charge, and what song is playing on the radio.

They had that on cars to show the performance since the 70's, such as gas consumption when accelerating and such.......You have to realize and its a good idea, you have to get used to your layout, and that includes the instrument panel. When you look at the cars performance, such as gas consumption or outside temp. Glance, do not read through it like a check list.

I had a outside temp and digital compass on my work truck. at first I did not think a compass was that useful until I started using it.

but....

The highway is not the place to check Facebook. Flashy dashboard displays are a killer app — but not in a good way. Should there be limits on dashboard displays?

If they put that in, then they should start thinking about criminal charges against the car maker as well as the person who bought it.

I do love my GPS, it lets me concentrate on driving, while the GPS is my navigator.

At times I do over shoot a turn off, but that does not bother me, it recalculates, and the time savings as well as improved attention to other vehicles on the road.

Like anything else COMMON SENSE should tell the driver not to be playing with this crap while driving. But common sense seems to be in very short supply these days.

there was a documentary that stated if cars had a sharp 8" bladed spike in the the middle of the steering wheel pointed at the driver chest, we would all be safer drivers.

And I think that is true.
