Hemmings Motor News Blog

Hemmings Motor News has been around since 1954. We're proud of our heritage, but we're also more than the Hemmings full of classifieds that your father subscribed to. Aside from new editorial content every month in Hemmings, we have three monthly magazines: Hemmings Muscle Machines, Hemmings Classic Car and Hemmings Sports and Exotic Car.

While our editors traverse the country to find the best content for those magazines, we find other oddities related to the old-car hobby that we really had no place for - until now. With this blog, we're giving you a behind-the-scenes look at what we see and what we do during the course of putting out some of the finest automotive magazines you'll ever read.

Want to Buy a 1944 Sherman Tank?

Posted March 15, 2010 12:01 AM by dstrohl

What a way to celebrate this year's March Military Campaign – a 1944 Sherman M4A2E8 tank for sale on Hemmings.com. Any ad that includes the phrase "This is no joke" is gold in our books. From the seller's description:

"Very complete and original, with it's good running, original 6-71 Detroit diesel engines. This was the model used by the USMC in WWII and sent out for Lend Lease. Wide rubber track in excellent condition. Gun barrel 76mm intact, no breech ring or block. Clean, no major rust, very nice interior. Maintenance and restoration required."

If it has electronic throttle control, I don't want it.

They do try and end up shooting the suspect dead.

Don't steal one then...........or may be you just gave CHP's a new tactic to stop a Toyota.....or maybe it's CHP's new anti-runaway interceptor/traffic violator apprehension vehicle.

I believe that was the case when a German ignitor (shell) hit it...

It was partially due to the US using gasoline and Germans used diesel in their tanks. I still want it. :-)

Sorry, but this is a popular misconception. All German tanks used high-octane gasoline. They simply had better armour and fire suppression systems.

It's the old trade off... speed vs armour. Best thing about the Sherman was the sheer number of 'em and their speed.
Tanks and submarines eh? Who'd really want to be in either? (Especially a tank in the North Sea or a Sub in Northern Europe)

But a sub buried in my yard would make a great hurricane shelter. Periscope to tell when it is all clear, too.

I am probably wrong here but i have two comments about this very cool tank.

Im a tank freak and i have never heard of a M4A mounting a 76 mm gun.?

I thought the " fireflies" where fitted with a long barrel 75 mm.

Also ... that muzzle brake looks exactly like the German design of muzzle brake ???

Anyone out there know about this or am i blowin smoke .?

Yes its an easy 8. US 76mm. It used British APDS ammunition to improve the performance as this gun was a home grown attempt to copy the Brit 17pdr as used in the Firefly. The muzzle brake was added to cope with the APDS charge and recoil.

Little known fact: Brit M4s with 75s carried 6 rounds of OE - Operational Emergency ammunition in Normandy and on. It was classified so no records exist - they didn't want the Axis knowing the allies were using Tungsten based APDS to help improve performance. Problem was the barrel life was only a few rounds so it was usuallly buried on the turret floor. M4 was also first production tank to have gun stab. Tank nut and designer.

Enjoy.

Thanks Guest ; Makes sense , US gun bored to Brit. specs. to fire Brit . APDS. etc.

Im with you about the requirements of a muzzle brake on a high velocity gun but am very intriqued with what looks to me to be an exact copy of the German muzzle brake installed on the German high velocity 75 tank killer and 88 Panther and Tiger .?
