Computer Program 'Reads' Minds

Posted March 15, 2010 8:08 AM

From CBC | Technology & Science News:

Researchers in the U.K. have used a computer program to analyze human brain activity and "read" a person's memory of watching a short film. Researchers at University College London say their analysis of brain scans can reliably predict which of three short films a person is thinking about.

My desktop PCs have been doing this for years now. They study my work habbits closely and in short order intuitively know when I'm working on something urgently important. And on such occasions they without fail cruelly choose to lock up in some clever new fashion.

"computer program to analyze human brain activity"

EXCELLENT development!! This has been too long overdue. It would be extremely useful in identifying nefarious and extreme minded characters, especially among "Air" travelers, helping to isolate them for "questioning" and quarantine procedures. Hope this reduces or eliminates the "anxiety ridden" environment in which we travel in these troubled times.

Even to say the practical use of this is in it's "infancy" would be an overstatement. How do you go from MRI readings to the images the person himself sees in his mind? I see more potential for misuse here than use.

Another crock of neuroscience. Did you see the version on "House" the other night? Lovely graphic video shape of a man playing baseball - this is pure "FX" and NOT reality.

Note from the article itself: The study involved ten ( that's 10 ) volunteers - that is not even a statistically meaningful number, for starters. Typical of "medical" research with an agenda. Can't they find 30 volunteers?

Secondly, it reports "The algorithm was able to predict correctly which of the three films the volunteer was recalling significantly above what would be expected by chance.." They do not give figures or confidence interval, nor qualify their use of "student variable" statistics for the small sample size.

Yes, they mentioned it was only ten subjects, but really, how many people in the general public even understand how statistics work (or are supposed to work). The story obviously wants to lead public opinion in favour that this MRI mind reading is a valid and believable tool. HOGWASH.
