NASA to Investigate Cause of Toyota Problems

Posted March 30, 2010 9:26 AM

From Wash Post Technology:

The federal probe into runaway Toyotas has resulted in enough scientific mystery that investigators have asked NASA scientists for help. The nation's auto-safety regulators have tapped nine experts from the space agency to answer questions involving software, hardware and other electronics issues, the Department of Transportation is expected to announce Tuesday, according to sources briefed on the plan who asked not to be identified because it is not yet public.

Imagine a stuck accelerator pedal on the Shuttle.

Its unfair to single out Toyota...other manufacturers have been known to have this problem but all have been hushed up. While it is commendable that finally these issues will be investigated by an independent (or is it ?) agency, Toyota bashing should stop.

I would be happy with an honest tally of all the acceleration problems broken down by manufacture and model.

However, as you say, Toyota has been the target of all the headlines and it is a little hard to tell what the true story is.

I think it has more to do with the fact that the other car manufacturers always seem to have some sort of major recall and Toyota only occasionally has a major recall that makes this problem so news worthy.

You're so used to hearing about a GM recall that it doesn't phase anyone anymore but a Toyota recall thats BIG NEWS.

No, federal investigators have recruited individuals from NASA to probe the issue and they are doing so from an industry wide perspective, which includes, but is not limited to, Toyota.

I can hear it now...when NASA shows up at Toyota's reception room...the scariest phrase that any engineer would dread to hear..."Hi, we're from government, and we're here to help!!!"
