I Hate Computers: Confessions Of A Sysadmin

Posted April 23, 2010 8:49 AM

From CrunchGear:

I often wonder if plumbers reach a point in their career, after cleaning clogged drain after clogged drain, that they begin to hate plumbing. They hate pipes. They hate plumber's putty. They hate all the tricks they've learned over the years, and they hate the need to have to learn tricks. It's plumbing, for goodness sake: pipes fitting together and substances flowing through them. How complicated can it be?

I hate computers. No, really, I hate them. I love the communications they facilitate, I love the conveniences they provide to my life, and I love the escapism they sometimes afford; but I actually hate the computers themselves. Computers are fragile, unintuitive things — a hodge-podge of brittle, hardware and opaque, restrictive software. Why?

Technology as a whole, esspecially communications

It was bad enough that at one time your phone rings and interrupts you when sitting down to have your supper, but now cell phones interupts your life consistantly.

Computers suppose to make your life easier, all what it did was increase your output, and make your days just as long.

The question is, would one go back to the way it was?

If it would not be for the "Dude" that can drop in and do his magic once in a while, I would be broke (broker). Its the same with cars though and lots of other things. I used to be able to prepare for a long trip by taking a ten minute look at the car and could confidently say that she'd be alright. Nowadays I just stand there in aw and would not touch anything. Just like I do with computers. They all need servicing and that industry is here to stay, forever.

I Hate Computers, but could not be with out one. Addiction has set in, Ky.

I hate computers only when they break because I'll have to stop everything and fix the dang thing. Sort of a love-hate relationship. I've been into electronics since I was a 10-year old kid back in the 50's when my dad was a radio/TV repairman. I haven't lost a bit of my work interest for over 55 years. I still design circuits using state-of-the-art technology, produce schematics and create circuit board layouts making clients happy; what more is there in life.

The thing I enjoyed about my dad's job and likewise a plumber's job is the higher level of people interface. When my dad made a service call to someone's house for a TV repair, the customer was made very happy. And I'm sure when a plumber fixes a water leak, a customer is made very happy even if it cost $750 to find and replace that cracked 2" irrigation PVC elbow fitting. The only downside is you have to deal with excited people wanting you to drop everything and come out NOW to fix stuff.

Any time you try to create a system that can do everything, it will do nothing very well

I was a sys admin for a food store responsible for everything that ran on power and services required for data communications etc.

My answer is that I loved it when there was money in the company to run the infrastructure correctly. BUT when penny pinching upper managements poor decisions to buy the cheapest solution ( when you presented them with better options that cost more ) or they put off an upgrade from the budget and it leads to disaster and they point the finger at you as to why its not working and their e-mail is down. That is when I got fed up with it!!!

The answer isnt so much hating computers as much as hating DUMB ASS MANAGEMENT!!!! If us sys admins were able to work with the proper resources that we need, everything would run much smoother. We would have redundancy and pan B and C's when plan A ran into an issue.

But when they expect an out of date Pentium II 233Mhz Exchange 5.5 server ( the heart of the e-mail for the company ) to never die or be a problem in 2010, and then bitch when its down once or twice a week and refuse to replace it and you are fighting with obsolete hardware to get it back up and running...THAT is just stupid and irresponsible from their standpoint!!!

The other issues that they had was that the security needed to be tightened to protect credit card numbers and they half assed that as well, so I gave my notice and left.

BUT I still love computers... I just hate retarded management that are so damn stupid and waiting to hear from friends at the company when this and that fails and the kiss ass that stepped up to my position is stuck with it.
