Bio-Fuel Means Goodbye-Ol'-Fuel

Posted May 08, 2010 8:08 AM

As a heavy construction equipment operator, you never thought it would happen in your life time. Gas and diesel are being replaced with…gasp…of all things, vegetable oil. One manufacturer, Volvo, has dedicated an entire division to emerging bio-fuel tech for "Heavy Duty applications" such as bio diesel and CO2-neutral DME. Is it possible to obtain the same amount of driving, digging, lifting and earth moving power from bio-fuel sources as from oil-based fuels? Do you see yourself making the conversion from oil to bio-fueled equipment any time soon?

The preceding article is a "sneak peek" from Construction Tools & Equipment, a newsletter from GlobalSpec. To stay up-to-date and informed on industry trends, products, and technologies, subscribe to Construction Tools & Equipment today.

The bottom line that industry will be asking is, "What does it cost?"

I can't imagine it will cost less, so how much more will it cost the contractor to complete his job, will he be able to pass that cost increase on to the customer, and how will he stay competitive to competition that does not use bio-fuel?

You won't be seeing significant numbers of on or off road diesels running on straight vegetable oil

as it

won't meet the emission regulations

needs a separate fuel tank for either dino diesel or biodiesel to start

biodiesel will flush all the crud out of the fuel system that dino diesel leaves behind, this isn't always a good thing

natural gas or propane is another possible option

California is moving towards replacement of older dirty off road [construction equipment & AG] diesels

The biodiesel are probably OK (assuming utilization problems solved) as long as waste product is used but will have the same problem as ethanol has on corn once the demand increase. The choice will be "eat or drive?"

We do not produce enough food to feed the people and run our vehicles. This is why we are tapping in the "storage" that has been built up during the last few million years.

The point is that once the fossil fuel is mostly depleted, we will have to use many different sources of very expensive energy to continue as we are now going. The only alternative will be to reduce drastically our energy consumption or go nuclear for most of our energy.

Green energies will feed some nice sections of our needs but will not be sufficient to meet all the demand in the next 40 years. After that, younger ans brighter people will have to find solutions...
