Lending Landlines a Lifeline?

Posted May 28, 2010 10:06 AM

The U.S. telephone industry could be flooded with bankruptcy stories in the coming years as consumers opt to cancel land lines for cell phones. Smaller phone companies like Qwest and Frontier don't offer wireless options to retain customers. As their revenue decreases, they have less money to maintain the costly and aging copper wires necessary to the land line network. Plus, many of these small companies employ personnel in numbers similar to the auto industry and offer similar pension plans. Some of the smaller companies have already filed for bankruptcy to stay afloat. Should the government consider what could be a very expensive bailout of the phone industry?

I've had consistently poor service from Frontier and at their demise I'd not shed a tear. Had they not continuously lied to me I may have another opinion but we don't have another provider choice for our small community and Frontier took advantage of us. We chose to shut-off the land-line for cause.

Yet again we are witness to the horrors of innovation!!! When, oh when will we ever take a stand to eliminate the displacement of workers and the capital lost to failed ventures in outdated technology?

I say now is the time. Now is the time to take a stand. Now is the time to commit to ending the painful adjustments that come with the unstoppable advance of technology. Let us all commit that from this point forward we will not tolerate inconveniences to investors nor to workers.... no! That is too lenient! Let us commit to a retroactive policy whereby not only will future inconveniences be avoided, but past inconveniences will be compensated!

The obvious place to start is with the descendants to the buggy whip manufacturers as well as the descendants of telegraph workers all displaced by the uncaring advance of technology.

Please help me develop the businesses unfairly ended by the onslaught of technology...

America now is the land of parasitic hangers on and "victims" including individuals, social groups, all races, companies, and technologies. For those dog-ooders and Utopian idiots who need other peoples money to satisfy their moronic sense of social justice. I have only one comment: Get thee the hell out of here! And all those who would reply don't waste any time doing so.

The do gooders are nothing but revolutionary tools, useful idiots, for the socialist/Marxist revolution, still bloodless, now proceeding in America under the BHO's. The "brilliant minds" that run Acorn's pimp halls are now having a bigger impact on America than our founding fathers. They stuff ballot boxes. You may not even vote. Don't worry-- you will be "taken care off" BHO says so. After all he is a AA, PC graduate of Harvard. A friend of Bill Ayers. Who are you?

They should have invested in fibre optics and offered Broadband to replace telephone only services.

the supply of fast fibre optics to business`s would have sustained them.

Offer the systems to monitor remote factory systems, and security systems in real time via fibre optics and microwave communications would mean less dependence on domestic telephone lines

There is something of an argument to be made for maintaining the copper infrastructure as a last resort backup system.

It's not a far-fetched scenario that heavy radiation (including high altitude nuclear detonations or extraordinary sun activity) could destroy all non-hardened electronic communications.

Not only should we maintain the copper, we should probably also harden the switching centers (Tempest level) and stock good old fashioned telephony style modems.

Won't these companies just get bought by companies that did advance?
