An LED That Mimics an Old Standby

Posted June 24, 2010 11:41 AM

From NYT > Science:

The ubiquitous 40- and 60-watt incandescent light bulbs are supposed to be in their last few years of existence; a phase-out of incandescents mandated by the federal government begins next year with the 100-watt model and works its way down to the smaller bulbs in 2014. Bulb manufacturers are working on a variety of replacements, including halogens, which, like incandescents, make light by letting current flow through a filament. Others will be replaced by compact fluorescents.

Got a better Idea, lets replace the government with someone with more than one neuron to rub together and dispense with this crap.

I'm wondering what I'm going to replace my little girl's easy bake oven light with... What if I wanted to use an incandescent for purposes other than lighting? Will incandescents be totally unavailable? I guess I'll now read the whole article...

The government is trying to save the planet, and all you can think of is an easy bake oven?

I believe a halogen lamp is just an incandescent with some halogen gas added. The easy bake oven should work fine with one, but if not just use a power resistor.

I am all for alternatives. The compact fluorescents have some problems.

Yeh, like the Spanish Government is? The net effect is the destruction of their economy, which will certainly curtail their energy usage but it probably isn't the best way to accomplish that goal....
