When Does 3D Become Necessary?

Posted July 10, 2010 7:53 AM

This summer's blockbusters are available (for a premium ticket price) in 3D in select theaters. Hollywood has decided that 3D is a good bet, perhaps even a necessity for a big movie. Television makers are telling us that 3D will be the next big thing in our homes. But will it? Most of us are conserving our cash right now, and are fairly happy with the TVs we have. What will it take to get folks to switch?

The popularity of such high tech movies like Avitar has made a big impact on the movie going crowd and I think they are ready for this new dimension. Sure, a lot of people are tightening their belts, but there are still enough people around who are willing to pay for it. If people want something bad enough, they will get it somehow. Will 3D be a necessity? Only if box office sales start to fall and especially if it makes it's way into the home first. In years past, Hollywood movies were not available to the home market for several years, then months and now practically as soon as they are released.

Hell, considering that 99% of what Hollywood excretes is crap even 2D isn't 'necessary'.

I agree with you on crap movies. I haven't been inside a movie theatre in over 30 years. The last movie I saw was The exorcist. I prefer to watch old movies on the TCM network. What really gripes me is the price of a ticket. After buying your ticket, popcorn, etc, It cost you 20 bucks to see crap.

With the general availability of movies available via satellite, Netflix direct-to-your-PC and direct-to-your-TV, as well as other sources of almost instant access to recent releases, why go to the theater? The only reason I can think of is for a special movie experience, such as 3D, and in this case I would probably be OK with having to wear special glasses to see the stereo images. There's no way I'd bother with those things at home on a day-to-day basis. Maybe also for a special event (superbowl in 3D?)

Gotta agree with SteveM, though; Hollywood is an excellent example of 'Sturgeon's Law'.

If you have not watched a movie in 30 years how would you know that they are crap?

I have not been inside a movie theatre in 30 years. That doesn't mean I haven't seen movies on TV or video rentals. Sometimes I see a preview of a new movie and think, maybe I'll go and see it. I wait a few weeks and finally it is available for rent. I rent it for $1 and after watching it, I say , "I'm sure glad I didn't go to the theatre to see this piece of crap." I'm only out a dollar, not 20.

With the blockbuster movies and games coming out in 3D, as well as the hardware availability I am pretty sure within next 5 - 10 years 3d will become necessary for eye candy and for showing off.

I had the "occasion" to go to the movies with a friend of mine the other evening. Our choice of movie became reduced to which movie wasn't in 3D.

Partly because I'm colour blind but also because she wears prescription eye wear. Though not contact lenses.

We enjoyed "The A-Team" all the same.

I won't be investing in a 3D TV any time soon.

Ain't an investment!.-Plasma,s &lcd,s fail in 12-36 months usually(the LATEST 3D uses them)- I am quite content with my 1989 26" Philips crt set- over 20 years use & still like new pic- checked tube emission about 8 months ago- all 89%- brief touch-up- emission now 92% all- & this will slay you!- I got the set from a rubbish tip- about 10 years ago!.

I have several large screen CRT TV's around the house, none of them did I pay more than $50oz for them. Perfectly serviceable I have added digital set top boxes to them as Oz is shutting down the analogue TV signal.

I have no intention of paying the price of a good used car for a TV. But a few people have and I've benefited by buying their 3 yo CRT TV's for next to nothing.

I have been fixing tv,s vcr,s etc for over 30 years- so I know a good set when I see it. THE ONLY set crt that has a pic as good as my Philips is a Sony $3k crt 100 Hz- which I fixed! recently. Yes- the late model Chinese stuff ain't bad- apart from power supply failures every couple years(easily fixed). As to plasma! &lcd! fergit it! expensive to buy, unreliable, very expensive to fix- & that crap pic!. BUT- the public luv em-ohhh- that flat screen- & sooo slim!! $2k plus- it's ok we'll get on 4 year interest free terms!. No wonder oz & other western countries are stuffed! No wonder I feel like going beyond the black stump or Timbuctoo- which I think you might have a nodding acquaintance with according to your name.!.

You seem to know your TV (and do not have strong opinions ), so an off topic question; if you had to buy either an LCD or plasma TV set, which would you go for and which make would be your preference.

I ask the question because I am moving into much smaller accommodation (getting old) and do not have room for my trusty old CRT's. They just take up too much room and need two people to move them.

Hi friend- I too am getting on-recently had to spend 6 days in hospital for infected leg ulcer(now healing well using zinc bandages)- any way was in a room with own lcd tv- about 14" with built-in dvd player- Grundig I think- the pic, tho not as good as crt, was acceptable- & the set runs off 12v dc power!. Go for something like that in my opinion- preferably a name brand- but generally speaking cost of set after shopping around higher price-name brand- warranty length-& equally important how you like the pic. If you can get a late model lcd with LED backlight-way to go!.(most lcd failures are ccd backlight failing- high priced- power hungry-short life). Completely forget plasma!!!- biggest rubbish ever foisted on unsuspecting public!!!. Google plasma tv-class actions- for sad history of plasma junk.
