US Military to Attack Future Computers

Posted August 10, 2010 7:48 AM

From BBC News - Technology:

Computers that can perform a quintillion calculations per second are being planned by the US military. The Defence Advanced Research Projects Agency (Darpa) has awarded the first grants to firms it wants to build so-called exascale computers. These will be far more powerful than current top supercomputers which manage just over one petaflop - 1000 trilliion calculations per second. Darpa expects the first prototypes to be working by 2018.

Hmm, 1 Million Trillion calculations per second by 2018.

I suspect windows Vista should be up to its equivalent of a service pack 3 or 4 by then and will likely require that much processing power just for basic internet browsing by then any way. I also suspect a minimum of 20 Ter RAM may be required by then for it to work somewhat sort of seamlessly as well.

At least someone is planning ahead for the next generation of Microsoft software bloating!

Don't worry, we will still be using the term Giga, though only to describe the cost.
