Combating Construction Equipment Theft on the Internet

Posted August 31, 2010 8:04 AM

It's not uncommon for heavy construction equipment like graders, bulldozers, even cranes to be stolen from a job site and quickly sold for cash on the black market.

Now contractors, equipment owners, and insurers have come together to create a unique Web site that fights equipment theft and even assists in recovering stolen goods. The National Equipment Register (NER) offers an interactive map displaying theft patterns throughout any given territory and also issues alerts on theft activity.

As contractors and equipment owners, do you foresee yourself utilizing a Web site like NER? What other measures have you taken to safeguard heavy equipment from possible theft?

Seems hard to believe graders bulldozers and cranes were easily stolen. Seems like there wouldn't be all that many of them, like cars.

Can't see how this NER could hurt. Seem to remember mapping of cases was important in London for figuring out what wells were spreading Cholera.

I heard of a Tractor stealing ring once. Seems the Sheriff of the small town ran it, but got caught.

The plumbing shop my brother works for has lost two backhoes to theft. The second one despite security cameras that had been set up. Backhoes are too easy to lose, especially if you move them a couple of states away or more. I can't imagine larger equipment is that easy to steal.

NER can't hurt. Make it voluntary. Once people lose a machine, they'll be all the more careful with their equipment.

Personally, I like the idea of holding an air compressor 100 ft in the air with the crane. Makes it hard to steal either.

Serendipity, synchronicity coincidence...

Last night our Kubota tractor was stolen from our shop yard. Ya gotta love it!

I have a feeling I will be contacting National Equipment Register soon.

There is a new set of locks that are able to lock any construction equipment. They have been in Euro. for along time but are new to the US. We currently are on E-Bay at the following http://stores.ebay.com/silentxena. The locks are very heavy duty and have a built-in shock and movement alarm.. Check it out, we have sold to a lot of Contruction Companies in Colorado. Will be expanding very soon!!! New Web sites are almost done that include video. If you would like to look at the beginning of one of them check this out http://heavyequipmenttheft.com. For more info write pnbdist@comcast.net

Thanks,

Mike

Yes, heavy construction equipment is a huge problem and has been happening for a long time. Thefts can occur at the job site, the Contractor's yard, from equipment dealers and even in transit along the country's highways.

Some pieces of equipment do end up in locations a few states away or clear across the country, but in a lot of instances stolen equipment is being stripped down to individual parts and shipped overseas in shipping crates and containers often described falsely on the manifest(s) as new parts, etc. Usually they sail right through US Customs...

About high time something like NER came into existance....now what the construction industry needs is an International database like NERl and a way for police in foreign lands to track down and confiscate these parts and then make arrests. Problem is that in many countries the cops are corrupt as all sin and often on the payroll of the crooks.
