Sinkpositive - Sink And Toilet In One

Posted March 06, 2007 12:54 PM

From OhGizmo!:

If you're the type who's now making a conscious effort to live a more 'environmentally-friendly' existence after seeing a particular documentary last year then you're no doubt concerned about your home's water usage. A company called Environmental Designworks has created a unique bathroom sink that's made to sit on your toilet's water tank and interface with its existing plumbing. While I'm not exactly thrilled with the idea of having my sink so close to the toilet I still think the concept here is a decent enough idea.

It may be environmentally friendly but is most assuredly NOT USER FRIENDLY.

If that is all Environmental Designworks has to market they will not be in business long.

The UK had those toilets for years but they didn't wash the fingers in them.

When the toilet float and flapper fail, there is no way to quickly jerk off the top of the toilet to grab the float and reset the flapper. During that time, more water is wasted than saved an a year.

Congress passed the "paper reduction act" that requires every taxpayer to add one more sheet of paper to comply with the law.

Congress also passed the water reduction act that now necessitates three to five flushes each cycle just to get one good flush. The water company should be happy with the additional funds.

Anyone see or belive the stats that substantiated,

The average bowl toilet water in the us is more pure and germ free than is

the average ice disposed by drink machines in public restaurants & public domain. Thanks to chlorine and repeated flushes at home compared to stagnant water in public disposals and restaurant drink machines.

Not sure what your flushing down that takes five flushes. I have one regular low flow that works great. I also have a "power assisted" low flow toilet that used system water pressure stored in a small tank inside the porcelain tank. It flushes everything with one flush.

It must be those 'mock' corn-on-the-cobs you deposit in there.

Try eating less corn, and perhaps a stool softener.

I am actually using rain water in my toilets (which is becoming more and more popular in my rergion) so washing my hands in it = big no no.

I affixed a dynamo to my toilet that I can pedal to generate power when I sit on the john. The power runs a reverse osmosis system and a centrifuge. The centrifuge separates the fluids from the stool. The reverse osmosis system then filters those fluids, my sweat, and urine to make clean water that I can use for washing. The solids captured in the conical centrifuge are dusted with plaster of paris and allowed to set harden. I then remove them, add a wire structure that I make out of leftover clothes hangers, and sell them as eco-friendly lamp shades. Want one?

In an arid country it would be better if the use of water for the transportation of sewage can be eliminated.

The designers must rather develop a system whereby the stuff can be dried out and deposited into bags for disposing. Sort of an electric chair without electrodes attached to the user.

I believe they are called self-composting toilets, I don't have any links offhand, but they do exist. waterless urinals are also out there as well- I've seen them at national parks and some more arid public places, actually not a bad idea, they work better than most people assume.

We are desperately trying to eradicate the "bucket" system (It is seen by some as a bad remnant of the previous regime). In this process we have supplied taps and toilets to millions of people with the unfortunate effect that the water care works cannot handle the flow and rivers are polluted with raw sewage spills.

We have tried volume reducers but the result was that the toilet is flushed repeatedly (3 - 5 times as mentioned above)

The planned "progress" envisaged for this year will have more detrimental effects.

I think it's a great idea. It would be especially usefull where space is limited. Say you have a small bathroom with just enough space for a toilet, a sink and a shower stall but you'd rather have a nice shower/tub combo. This might work. If you don't mind using public toilets, you shouldn't mind using this either. However, a public unit with infrared auto-on sensors would offer greater peace of mind.
