Posted September 16, 2010 8:29 AM

From Fast Company:

Sunlight is the world's most plentiful resource. That is, of course, why the United States has scrambled in recent years to supplant dirty, nonrenewable energy sources with ambitious solar projects. Below, we look at some of the most exciting solar projects--both existing and planned--in the country.

"That is, of course, why the United States has scrambled in recent years to supplant dirty, nonrenewable energy sources with ambitious solar projects."

Scrambling? I don't see any scrambling going on out there. Anybody see any scrambling going on? Scrambling? Anyone? Hmmm?

There's a distant, almost inaudable dripping sound though. Hear it? Kind of uneven - maybe a big drop every 5 years or so. And then usually followed by the sound of it running down the drain.

Sunlight is the world's most plentiful resource.

Oh yeah? How do you know? What an absolutely ridiculous statement.

Ariel Schwartz. That explains it.

Ariel Schwartz writes, "Sunlight is the world's most plentiful resource. That is, of course, why the United States ..." Makes one wonder: Does she take the train or pack her lunch?

All articles by Ariel Schwartz are like this - journalism lite mixed with green fuzzy headed thinking. The article says nothing new - no details of any interest.

This is what happens when a blogger that does not know shit from shortcake about a topic is getting paid by the hit.

People like her set the green movement back every time they they post. The true believers (the 2%) bow down and say yes! yes! while everyone else shakes their head.

"features 936,384 parabolic mirrors and spans more than 1,600 acres. In total, SEGS provides power for 232,500 homes."

That's just over 4 for each home. I want one. Can I get them on Ebay?

Statements like this do more harm than good. Adding confusion? Me? Why not?

There seems to bit a bit of cynicism in the responses so for, so why not join in!

Of the eight listed, it seems that only two are actually fully commissioned and three still have significant hurdles to go through before approval to proceed.

The interesting sideline that I note is the relative efficiency that seems to be cited for the various locations. A little under 1MW per acre of installed system. Maybe a focus on efficiency rather than sheer size might give everyone a winning edge.

What would be really exciting for me would be an economic "domestic" unit that each and everyone of us could build as kit form and construct the largest distributed system rather than these concentrated devices.
