Are YOU Ready for 3D TV?

Posted October 16, 2010 7:58 AM

Lately, everyone is talking about the coming of 3D TV. TV manufacturers are introducing new models in time for the holiday season. Sky network in the UK is launching a channel specifically to broadcast in 3D. But 3D means more than just adding a dimension. It changes the way that shows will be written, filmed, and edited. What's your take? Are you planning to jump on the 3D bandwagon? Why, or why not? What "killer programming" (mimicking "killer apps" in computing) would convince you to take the plunge? What other programming do you think should be available in 3D?

The preceding article is a "sneak peek" from Electronic Test Equipment, a newsletter from GlobalSpec. To stay up-to-date and informed on industry trends, products, and technologies, subscribe to Electronic Test Equipment today.

I believe 3D TV will be a passing FAD; I do not see how anybody would sit and wear glasses to get the experience. That would definately get old quickly. Once developed a holographic TV system would be much cooler.

I finally saw a demo of one of the 3D TV's recently, and I was really impressed with it. However, I think no matter what bells and whistles they throw at me, I'm going to hold off until they drop the price below the multiple thousand dollar mark. I'm far too frugal (cheap!) to justify spending that much on a TV.

TV?

Who watches TV any more?

OK: So there are a lot of people who still watch TV.

But TV is so not the point of 3D visualization technologies.

The purpose of the technology is to help people understand and interact with forms and concepts that are much easier to understand when put in 3D. Of course as this technology moves into "serious" applications, it will also appear in entertainment applications.

But I think the line between canned entertainment and self-created entertainment (which is usually "3D" because it's live) will begin to become more significant to life and survival. I don't have time to sit in front of a screen and "veg out" for 2 or 3 hours a day, or a week for that matter. People who do that are going to find their control over their own lives slipping away. People who use their free time to proactively create their own futures will have a better chance to retain a measure of freedom and viability.

3D visualization technology is just one of many technologies coming down the pipeline that will be used and misused according to who can afford it or control it or create with it.
