But Do You Want 3D?

Posted November 11, 2010 7:26 AM

The TV makers are pushing 3D TVs (and gaming systems, laptops, and cellphone displays) hard this year, showing off plenty of prototypes and promising store models soon. The question is: do consumers want 3D displays? I'm dubious, but I was also dubious about HDTV, until I saw first a football game and "The Sting" on the enhanced screen. But I don't want to see a tackle in 3D and I'm not going to strain my eyes to watch the likes of "Alice in Wonderland" in 3D.

The preceding article is a "sneak peek" from Display Technologies, a newsletter from GlobalSpec. To stay up-to-date and informed on industry trends, products, and technologies, subscribe to Display Technologies today.

of course I want 3d... and to continue on from there.. I want to be completely immersed in a 3d environment... a new world... in 5 senses... why stop the development at 2d? it doesn't make sense.

A 3D TV sounds great, but I want it without glasses and in a normally lit room.....I do believe its not yet really possible....and when it is, I do believe it will be incredibly expensive.....

Which I won't pay for.....

There is a further problem, Hollywood is not taking to 3D as it costs around 3 times as much to make a film, so there may be a dearth of film material to watch!!!

I expect that someone will come up with either a set top converter that makes a signal from 2D to 3D on the fly, or a box that will convert any 2D film, but is only for film companies (expensive!).

The only good thing about 3D is that its making normal HD sets far cheaper.....GREAT!

I have yet to see any 3d televisions. I use rabbit ears, get about 8 channels with HD and it is all I need. I got rid of cable TV about 4 years ago. I think cable companies are becoming monopolies and will charge for what and what ever they want. One of our local companies has purchased several pro sports teams and then they put them on special channels that cost you extra. I had already paid them extra for sports packages and then they put these teams on the specialty channels. So I choose not to watch these teams. They will kill sports and development in TV programs if not reined in soon. Sports was the only reason I had cable in the first place.

My prior cable provider had; phone, TV, and internet. Still use cable for internet and but got rid of cell phones. Not sure I really needed cell phones once I retired. The cell provider would impose an unwritten contract on me and then tell me I am locked into this contract for several years. Roaming along the Canada US border was problematic as I was mostly paying roaming charges ($1 per minute incoming or outgoing) from Syracuse, NY when I was on Wolfe Island, Canada. When they stopped reversing the charges, I said the hell with it. I can afford them, just think that these companies wield too much power. I suspect soon we will have high quality internet TV that will cause the providers to rethink strategies of marketing. I watch soccer games on internet that are not available on regular TV.

I am all for 3d but not yet willing to fork out the dough. Lets bring on holographs and then maybe we can see concerts without leaving the house. Hmm, that might be worth it.

3d???

Heck, I'm too cheap to pay for anything more than analog cable!! And it's gonna stay that way until my ADSL receiver dies.

If I could get ala carte programming I'd settle for about 5 channels to hopefully reduce my cable bill.

And the only reason I have cable tv is because I have cable internet and the discounts for having both are worth it.

I'm with you Hooker.

Nothing much on the tube worth my time to watch, let alone pay for the privilege. But yet, we subscribe so we can get the broadband. The thieves at the cable company that rhymes with past won't just sell you internet without the TV.

Yepper, Sir Robin, I have that same company.

Licensed thieves, they are. And our local regulatory body is bought and paid for by them.

TV? What is TV? Oh, yeah- it's that box in the other room that the wife likes to listen to...Not much use for it myself. 3D? If all she is using it for is to generate her "white noise" environment, what difference does it make how many dimensions it has?

Now, I would like to see a 3D TV demonstration, just to see what all the hoopla is about, but I don't see any reason to PAY for it just yet.

Let me know when someone puts something on TV that is really worth watching, and I might change my attitude...
