Next Nook Coming in Color

Posted November 20, 2010 3:31 PM

Color is coming to the Nook e-reader this month, via an LCD touchscreen with a wide viewing angle. So is the device a tablet PC (in which case it's cheaper than the iPad) or an e-book reader (in which case the battery life doesn't compare to a Kindle)? And where does this leave e-paper?

The preceding article is a "sneak peek" from Display Technologies, a newsletter from GlobalSpec. To stay up-to-date and informed on industry trends, products, and technologies, subscribe to Display Technologies today.

Odd...

It uses an IPS LCD which seems like an odd choice of technology. IPS is great for television where wide viewing is required. It's also good for desktops/laptops where a wide screen is needed to put up multiple windows and you want to maintain high contrast over the range of viewing angles for the eye to all edges of the screen. But, for a small book-size screen where the viewing cone is fairly small, a TN-AMLCD with standard wide-viewing polarizers would be adequate. Also, the IPS has comparatively low transmittance compared to a TN-AMLCD, meaning more backlight power is needed, which is traded-off with shorter battery life. If the backlight is designed with narrow-angle enhancements to match the actual viewing cone, then the super-wide-angle advantage of the IPS LCD is completely wasted.

Another point is that many people read their e-books in the daytime, outside, where an IPS LCD (which is transmissive only) can't achieve the brightness needed to overcome daytime glare. For comparison, the Kindle is reflective and is easily readable in daylight. A better choice (if they wanted color) would have been a transflective TN-AMLCD. It would have thus had good readability in daylight, with a backlight allowing it to be readable in a dim room, and full color.

Makes you wonder who, at Barnes & Noble, made the technology selection.

I usually handle tongue-twisters okay. I'm a cunning linguist.

There's some guy on CR4 whose tagline says "I joined CR4 to meet women." Take heart! (or ?)

He joined CR4 to meet women? I guess he meant that tongue-in-cheek. Heh.

I admit I'm partial to the Kindle. Bought one for my wife last year and she loves it. I've used it, too, and like it a lot.

i got my Kindle (the sensible $139 one) recently and am an addict already. The paperback feels too heavy and i don't enjoy it anymore ! Strange how one gets used to a bad habit.

i keep my movie-watching persona separate, and watch movies on my TV using a Media player. With nice surround sound and all.

What would i do with a colour e-book reader ? Can't think of anything. Unless i can get Asteix,Tin Tin etc.

But then, i am old, and remember carrier pigeons delivering mail. A tad more reliable than the intenet, though slower
