Plasma or LCD Under the Christmas Tree?

Posted November 29, 2010 9:00 AM by Steve Melito

Sales of plasma televisions rose 28% from Q2 to Q3 according to Quixel Research, a market research firm specializing in the home theater and home entertainment display markets. That's the second quarter in a row that plasma TVs have outsold large-screen LCD televisions. Meanwhile, the overall market for large area displays (LAD) grew 25% from Q3 2009 to Q3 2010. During that same period, plasma TV sales rose 15%

"Hopefully, it is clear by now that the HD 720p segment is not dead yet for larger-sized TVs", says Tamaryn Pratt of Quixel Researchl. A type of high definition (HD) television or HDTV, 720p combines 720 pixels of vertical display resolution with progressive scanning. When broadcast at 60 frames per second, 720p also provides a superior temporal resolution under digital video broadcasting (DVB) standards.

Would you rather have Santa Claus leave you a plasma TV or LCD TV under the Christmas tree?

I have to agree with Guest, except that ANY good make of LCD with LED lighting is a good buy against Plasma & LCD without LED lighting.....

But it should also have built-in DVBT and DVBS tuners.....DVBC is unimportant for me as there is no cable around here......

Yes, here around in Belgium, new televisions are based on LED technology

Plasma and LCD seems to be obsolete ...

Unless you live in a sports stadium, you are not watching TV on an LED-only display. There are no LED-only TVs that fit in your living room. The closest is an OLED (Organic LED) but for now that technology is only good for small hand-held displays. A few demo OLED 'full-size' TVs have been built, but they are not in full production, and won't be until they get the OLED aging issue solved. Hand held devices like phones are replaced more often than TVs so aging is not an issue.)

'LED' TVs are LCD TVs with LED backlights instead of fluorescent backlights. This would be my technology of choice, followed by DLP.

Plasma has the same potential aging issue as OLEDs, i.e., the light-emitting element is the same as the picture-generating element. The blue-emitting elements age faster than the red or green elements, so after a few years the picture begins to take on a yellowish cast -- unless the electronics include a compensation circuit for this differential aging.

I think Rudi just wrote it badly.......he meant LCDs with fluorescent tubes are old hat....that was how I read it.

Don't forget, LCD screens with tubes are sold as LCDs.

LCDs with LED backlighting say LCD and LED and also sometimes "Mercury free", my new computer screen was marked like that......

Rudi?

Look at the Mitsubishi DLP screens too. My next choice will be plasma, LED or DLP. Since that will be about two years from now, much more information about them will be available.
