Is a Design Degree a Necessity?

Posted December 02, 2010 7:00 AM

A career in healthcare design typically requires Evidence-based Design Accreditation and related certifications after standard interior design degrees are earned. How well-equipped is someone with these credentials to contribute to improved patient outcomes, facility workflows, and facility design? Considering the complexities inherent in this field, do you think there should be a specialized degree in healthcare design?

A good question, this is your answer - go out to 10 restaurants order a similar meal, 8 will be crap - yet each chef holds a piece of paper to say they are as qualified as the next person.

I left home and school at 13, have run electrical engineering firms, managed resorts and many other facilities without a piece of paper. Since then I have gone back to school for certification in a dozen areas, some were extremely important in training, some not.

many nurses would be more qualified than doctors to give advice on patient care. experience and talent are always better than a piece of paper. The question is, with just that piece of paper/degree how many full time jobs could employ someone with just that paper. In this case my guess is very few. so the answer is no there should already be sufficient people qualified by experience found by a series of requirements for the job. If not the next question is, who is the genius who holds no such degree that see themselves smarter than all others to write such a course and determine outcomes. If such outcomes are already known, then you are back to experienced people.

A degree only tells the employer that you attended a school. It doesn't tell him that you know anything. That will only be realized once you are working. Employers put too much importance on degrees. Hopefully you can find an employer who will put his trust in the person and not on the paper. An old saying goes: "A degree is only worth the paper it's written on". They fail to realize people like Edison, Ford and the Wright brothers didn't have paper (at least not the 4 year kind).
