Is Your Company in "Fire Drill" Mode?

Analytics often fall by the wayside during tough economic times because workforces are at their smallest. Workers tend to focus exclusively on what needs to get done today, rather than thinking about the future. But strategizing for the long term is also key to survival. A company that seeks to survive in anything more than the short term can never afford to be focused just on the "now". Putting out "fires" is a poor way to manage, regardless of the economic times.

There will be fires that come up that need attention, but a "fire" is more expensive to handle, whether it be financially or emotionally for the people working at those businesses.

Workers do need to focus on what needs to get done today.

Leadership needs to focus on the "now" and the short, mid and long term ranges. The longer the range the tougher it becomes because we have an administration and a bunch of legislators who can't seem to make up their mind what to do, or have an agenda that is contrary to the development of businesses, large or small.

Our business is having to respond to external forces we have no control of and we are doing this by being proactive rather than reactive.

I read a comment one time that stated something to the effect that "if you work for a company that isn't willing to change, you won't have a place to work in a few years."
