Counterfeit Construction Tools

Posted January 07, 2011 8:30 AM by Steve Melito

Dubai's Department of Economic Development (DED) recently seized 14,000 counterfeit construction tools that a local trader planned to distribute throughout the United Arab Emirates (UAE). As the site of some of the world's largest and most ambitious construction projects, Dubai boasts the planet's tallest building and over 75 structures that stand nearly 600 feet tall. Yet the fake tool caper that the DED discovered was far more modest, involving simple hand tools such as levels, snip cutters, chisels and measuring tapes.

According to a representative from a UAE law firm retained by the Stanley Works Company, the toolmaker had been on the lookout for Dubai dealers in counterfeit construction products. The DED's latest investigation began after Stanley became suspicious of the distributor while conducting a market survey. Dubai authorities then raided a warehouse and shop to seize the tools, which have since been destroyed.

But what exactly is a "fake tool"? According to critics of the construction tools industry, many U.S. companies don't manufacture their own tools anyway. Instead, products are made in foreign factories at low cost - and sometimes with low standards. Put another way, what's a "real" Stanley hand tool?

Beijing has subsidized the counterfeiting of American and Japanese products to the point that you can't now avoid buying stuff made in china.

The only recourse left to the rest of the world now is to ban ALL chinese imports, EVERYWHERE.

That's the only way the Beijing criminals will listen - hit their wallets and they'll have something to squeal about instead of the fake squeals they put out now whenever the US mentions their cheats and their lies.

Actually there are a number of companies involved in patent infringement that are really from Hong Kong, many predating the chinese government there. These companies just utilize the Chinese manufacturing now to support their efforts. The real criminals as it turns out are really some capitalist investors in Hong Kong and Taiwan who have for decades made a practice of this and the lax enforcement by the British and the the Chinese (Hong Kong receives a special preference under Chinese laws). Attacking Beijing won't do much good if the investors who do this move their manufacturing to Indonesia or Malaysia. If you want to stop patent infringement, go after the real financiers, throw them in jail the moment they land in Las Vegas to see their casinos, or NYC to look at their new offices.
