A First Look at Flight in 2025

Posted January 14, 2011 10:40 AM

From NASA:

In late 2010, NASA awarded contracts to three teams — Lockheed Martin, Northrop Grumman, The Boeing Company — to study advanced concept designs for aircraft that could take to the skies in the year 2025.

The basic design of planes did not change dramatically from 1965 - 80 , 1980 -95, 1995 to 2010 and may not change dramatically to 2025.

the Catamaplane (2 hulls) has been tried before and was discarded. (Maybe because of structural requirements at the engines )

Agree with you wholeheartedly. I really don't think the basic airliner platform will change dramatically, even past 2025 and quite some time thereafter. Air travellers will be less likely to board a weird looking airliner as opposed to a conventional aircraft, like what we have today. Then there's going to be cost of an "advanced" aircraft. All one has to do is look at the skyrocketing costs associated with aircraft destined for the US Military in the last 40 years and get a glimpse of the upward spiralling cost for building new civilian airframes.

Just tossing my my 2 Cents worth....

I am not sure how the mechanical advances and changes may go but I can imagine security based on its present rates and direction of change to be something like this in 2025.

You enter the airport and turnover your luggage which is immediately cataloged and then shredded and incinerated. You yourself will be medicated into a comatose state where you then will be stripped naked and a Hannibal Lechtor mask and restraint system will be put on you just in case you where to gain consciousness while in flight.

Upon your arrival you will be reawakened and supplied with all new clothing and luggage according to what the pre flight cataloging recorded you as having. Quality and fit may be subject to change though.

The flights themselves will be world wide at any time for a $10 flat rate but then there will be around $4000 of service fees added on that are not listed on the flight booking when you buy your ticket.

Just a guess.

When I arrived from my home planet, I marveled at the immense waste of real estate required for the taxi, take off and landing of airplanes. Not to worry, 2026 is the date VRTX opens its first show room for the Modal T agrav machine. 7.5 feet high, 22 feet in diameter and seats 2 to 1200 people. Unladen, thirty seven pounds. Speed N/A. Let me know if anyone wants a test drive.

The Yellowstone Mega-volcano will erupt in 2024 and eradicate all commercial, military and civil aircraft, as well as most of the world's population, negating the need for any air travel.

Famine and ground wars over resources will decimate the remaining population and modern civilization will cease to exist.

A new sub-nautical civilization will flourish until the limited workforce revolts and kills all the upper levels of civilization, leaving them helpless to continue without supplies or fuel.

It's hopeless!

Well just as long as it does not snuff out my tire, plastics, and used oil fires that I am using to push global warming along I will be okay with it.

Don't fret, you'll die within the first two hours after the eruption.

lynlynch I thought it was going to be worse than that. I'll have the caterer plan for some extra places at the BBQ. See you at the grand opening 2026!

And don't forget to tell the caterer to set aside a few kegs of Samuel Adams to go with those BBQ ribs!
