The newly-opened One New Change Shopping Center in London is
being called an eco-standard for property developers for its use of a geothermal
heating and cooling system. According to The Ecologist, this project is now
Europe's largest ground source heat pump.
Located in the building's basement, the operation is made-up
of a 60 km (~37.28 miles) pipe network that converts underground thermal heat into
a fluid medium through use of a heat pump.
Critics have voiced concerns over high implementation costs
and life expectancy of the heat pump. Land Securities PLC, builders of the
shopping center, estimates that the geothermal investment will save up to £300,000 in energy bills annually.
Patrick Sheriff of Geothermal International and designer of
the One New Change Center says "The renewable energy system will deliver carbon
reductions, cost savings and a comfortable work environment, making it a truly
sustainable building for the future."
