Why Hasn't 3DTV Caught On?

Posted February 08, 2011 7:00 AM

3D televisions (3DTVs) were all the rage at the last Consumer Electronics Show (CES) and every TV manufacturer is pushing their version of 3D, but will the lack of available content keep this technology from catching on? Or will the confusion and expense of the hardware make 3DTV a complete non-starter? Have you or anyone you know purchased a 3DTV?

The preceding article is a "sneak peek" from Electronic Components, a newsletter from GlobalSpec. To stay up-to-date and informed on industry trends, products, and technologies, subscribe to Electronic Components today.

I am an early adopter, but have not seriously considered a 3D HDTV. When they make 60-inch ones that viewers do not need goggles, I will be in the market.

For that matter, why hasn't this question caught on?

(What do you think about the problems of ignorance and apathy in our society?

I don't know, and I don't care.)

I don't care about 3DTV. I decided TV was no longer worth the trouble after the transition to the HDTV format. I was only watching PBS at the time as it was, and never went for cable or satellite. If I didn't have NPR radio and wide-ranging information on the Internet as knowledge sources, I guess I would have dealt with trying to receive the troublesome transmitted HDTV signal. My $.02 worth.

Most of the people I know are not bothered, they all have good HD televisions, and will not go to the expence of replacing them so soon! Also, we are in a recession, and most people here in England havn't got the money to waste on 3D TV's, they are struggling to pay their food and energy bills!

Most of us have just gone flat-screen, HD. Another major step so soon afterwards will take a long time to become 'mainstream', and the press on 3D doesn't seem so good. Remember the iPod? It was easily into 2nd generation before mass appreciation.

Hi GM1964,

I quite agree with you, and from what I have heard 3D TV, is not so good as they say at the moment, and my Sony Bravia 48 inch screen flat TV is only 3 years old, so why shood I be so stupid as to ditch it in favour of a 3D TV?????

We have a 50" 3DTV (Samsung) that was so reasonably priced it was the same as getting the plain HDTV. 2 free sets of 3D glasses came with it - we hardly every use it. Part of the problem, however, is that it is a "chicken and egg" issue at the moment - there's just not that much programming available so we rarely record or look for 3D programs.

The glasses aren't uncomfortable, but how many people want to sit in their living room with 3D glasses on for very long?

I agree with the comments on both the need for goggles and the abysmal content that is television today as together negating any desire to spend money on 3D TV.

I wonder if the TV couldn't be actually built into a pair of glasses, like virtual reality glasses.

This should be able to give an excellent 3D effect while being cheaper to make.

The disadvantage is that you would need a set for each viewer, which would probably nullify the price advantage!

Just a wild thought.
