How Your Username May Betray You

Posted February 14, 2011 8:50 AM

From Technology Review RSS Feeds:

By creating a distinctive username—and reusing it on multiple websites—you may be giving online marketers and scammers a simple way to track you. Four researchers from the French National Institute of Computer Science (INRIA) studied over 10 million usernames—collected from public Google profiles, eBay accounts, and several other sources. They found that about half of the usernames used on one site could be linked to another online profile, potentially allowing marketers and scammers to build a more complex picture the users.

If you want privacy - stay off line. On the otherhand, what does it matter if marketers are putting together a picture of you?

There's enough detail in my profile for anyone to identify me without looking at other sites and it has been that way since my first post.

I suppose that means the study is correct (in my case).

HOWEVER, I must congratulate CR4/GLOBALSPEC for having isolated me from the bombardment of marketing that might otherwise have happened.

Yes I did get replies when I made an enquirey to the organisation involved. I haven't been bombarded by third party organisations.

I understand that by contacting the organisation they will probably contact me indirectly. It's the "third party" contact that would casue me frustration.

I don't care who knows who I am or what I do. Since I am sure I am not doing anything wrong and I am sure I am not gullible enough to fall for any marketing scams I don't mind it one bit if someone wants to waste their time following me around.

Just don't reply to the solicitations. Soon enough you will be off their list.

Paranoia (normal as opposed to clinical) is a derivative of a big ego. It can be its own security blanket.

Ed Weldon ....... That's me.......easy enough to find but nothing much there except a hungry dog, an old pickup truck and a bunch of crackpot ideas. And cactuses. Man, I love cactuses.

I don't think that particular custom is limited to any specific region Many cactus lovers like it when the juice is fermented

for some the pickled worm is the best part :D

I already have a plenty of dogs

& other assorted critters

I'll keep you in mind should I ever feel a deficit....

Well said. There was a guy on here once really worried that someone might listen to his phone conversations. Here's a tip: If you are saying something on the phone worth someone listening in on, Don't broadcast on a public forum that you are worried that someone will listen in on your conversations.

I don't think I've ever said much that would be worth recording. Scale is a difficult thing for many people to grasp. Hence things seem way more important than they really are. In fact, I contend that the illusion of critical importance is one of the most destructive things in the world.

And by the way, you know how the bank tells you to keep your account numbers private? You know, that number that is printed on the bottom of every check. Worry about that for a while if you will.

Does my username betray the fact that I'm a cat?
