What's the Most Trouble Your GPS Has Caused You?

Posted February 28, 2011 8:09 AM

An article in the Sacramento Bee describes the sometimes deadly result of trying to drive through Death Valley — following a GPS route — and getting stuck or breaking down on back roads that only a four-wheel drive vehicle should attempt. Hopefully, you're worst GPS "incident" wasn't a near-death experience. What was the most trouble you've gotten into by relying (too much?) on electronic navigation aids? How do you defend yourself? Do you now carry paper maps/charts as a backup?

The preceding article is a "sneak peek" from Sensors & Switches, a newsletter from GlobalSpec. To stay up-to-date and informed on industry trends, products, and technologies, subscribe to Sensors & Switches today.

I use the stars and sun to navigate (and my ability to comprehend directions, common sense, and city layouts). The stars and sun seemed to work when we set sail around the world in wooden boats...but seriously, i might use my GPS to find the nearest coffee shop, but c'mon people, use a little common sense while operating a 3000lb piece of machinery. geesh.

Yeah, I like to navigate by the sun, but it's an all too rare occurance in the UK at the moment.
I like maps, my pet gripe is the road signs that direct you to the prefered route not the real one.
I live 20 minutes from Stansted airport, but some of the road signs would send you the looooong way round.
Common sense?... not much of it about these days.
I don't have GPS so it's never let me down... now where the heck am I?

Well....It was Southern Georgia, beautiful day. On the way to Jacksonville Florida. All a sudden, the GPS says "Left turn ahead".

I am on a 4 lane highway, traveling at 70mph and glance at the GPS to discover I am moving through green area [grass, forest, what-ever], and there is a large dotted line pointing to the Left.

Outdated map...didn't know the new bypass was there.

I will share my experience with a TomTom. We were camping in Missouri near Tom Sauk Mountain. We were trying to find a gas station for my brother-in-law to fill up his truck. The gps wanted us to drive through a 3ft deep ditch with steep banks onto an old fire road that had decent sized trees growing in it. The only way we could tell it was an old road was the cut through the side of the steep part of the hill. Good thing we always bring our trusty road atlas!

I used a GPS once and damned if I didn't find my self at work.......

The other time I use on was going to Brooklyn NY. Traffic jam with a near by exit. The funny thing was that "redirected way" was the way I originallt going to go after plotting with standard maps, instead of the way the GPS directed me.
