Have You Survived Online Untruths?

Posted March 02, 2011 7:00 AM

Information about you circulating around the Internet — no matter how untrue it could be — is remarkably difficult to quash or refute. A disgruntled customer or someone else with a grudge can easily post even the most derogatory comments. Even taking down the offending posts will not prevent them from showing up elsewhere. What do you think of the perpetual availability of someone's exaggerated gripe against you? Have you or someone you know experienced this type of issue? How did you respond? How successful were your efforts? What can we do to minimize or eliminate such incidents?

The preceding article is a "sneak peek" from Semiconductor & MEMS Fabrication, a newsletter from GlobalSpec. To stay up-to-date and informed on industry trends, products, and technologies, subscribe to Semiconductor & MEMS Fabrication today.

Yes. I was once labeled a forum "Guest" with the increasing connotation of being a forum troll or posting inflammatory comments... or making a fool of myself. But after considering the posts I made, I've overcome the stigma... except making a fool of myself.

(Sorry. Couldn't help myself. There I go making a fool of myself again.)

And the pot calls the kettle black once again.

As far as I am concerned both of you are over paranoid cowards and/or common issue internet trolls nothing more.

Good.

Now, dear readers, out of these 3 posts which one has resorted to name calling and insults. You may be registered, and posting so, but lack civility. I was hoping the winky sign would convey that my post was, more or less, tongue-in-cheek. You might consider seeing someone about your tendency to rage, when the situation hardly calls for it.

I thought your post was funny. Besides, who doesn't want to take the new anonymous feature for a test drive?

"Now, dear readers, out of these 3 posts which one has resorted to name calling and insults"

I did because I have the big brass ones enough to put my name to every single thing I post here for good or bad. The only time I have ever ever used the guest title was the first week I spent here before I decided to join and become a real member with a name and a reputation that can be tracked from one thread to another.

Dude, you need to chill. I've always posted as myself too, for better or worse. We have to remember, this isn't a freaking social club, it's an engineering site. They allow us a lot of latitude.

As long as anonymous posters don't decide to get involved in, or start some argument on here, they deserve as much respect as anyone else. You need to get off this kick! WTF

They are actually making an attempt to improve the site, and all you want to do is rant about how anyone that posts anonymously sucks. Quit it!

Hmm, maybe they could resolve this discourteous, malicious or ignorant behavior by having every one have to post their name, PE registration number and jurisdiction of registration. Then everyone knows that they are actually working engineers responding, and can locate them through registration records (plus they could file complaints against them with their jurisdictions that while unfounded possibly could be annoying to deal with). Additionally, it would probably stop all those over unity energy marketers from trying to drum up false or misinformed support. On the downside, no more college students with homework questions that neglect friction or aerodynamic effects.

Last time I checked mine weren't brass. But here I am posting as me. It doesn't seem to be a requirement.

I really didn't mean to ruffle anyone's feathers. So, I apologize. I'm sorry I touched, what is obviously, a raw nerve for you. You may have taken offense at some of the Guest posts for the very reasons you cite, but, I for one, have never posted in such a manner as a Guest, that would incite a reaction like yours... well... except for the one above.

Wow, Quash? If your company has the power to leverage blogs to remove unfriendly posts, adn you have to keep doing this repeatedly throug many differing blogs. This reminds me of a joke i heard last night about an old gal near a army base who made a comment about all 40,00 men on the base were bad F###ers. The comedians response was that maybe after 39,000 men she might have consider that the only commonality was her, and maybe the problem wasn't the men.

Seems to me that after you have had to threaten a few blogs to remove content, and are having problems quashing the content fast enough, maybe the problem isn't the commenters but the object of their comments?

So, at this point, I'll reply to the thread topic.

So far, I've never had the misfortune of such crudeness. I assume it is more likely to happen to people with some notoriety. I think identity theft is also harmful and in some cases, where there really is another person with the victim's name, the result is similar to what is being asked about here. I saw on TV one time where a story about a man whose identity had been stolen, was now having warrants issued for his arrest in other states, because his identity got mixed up with the person who assumed his. And getting it all sorted out turned out to be a huge stress, because it wasn't so simple as just showing your Driver's license to the right people.

Libel has, obviously, been around for a long time. It's just that in the past, it didn't have much effect unless it appeared in print or on TV. Now, with the Internet and Blogs, everyone is a newspaper unto themselves. You can write and say anything you want about anyone. The difference being, newspapers generally did/do their best to verify the truth of statements being made. In a Blog, the checker is the perpetrator. AND, it is harder for a reader to know for sure who the author is. I, guess, if you wanted to actually press charges of libel against someone, you could enlist the right authorities to investigate who is behind a Blog or post, whether they are posting with under a pseudonym or with an Avatar in a forum thread. But, jeez, people call each other things all the time in forum threads. Just like on a schoolyard playground. And, though it can really hurt, the harm done doesn't ruin your life.

I'd say it all depends on whether or not it has had a real and lasting effect on your life, reputation, etc.

It would be interesting to hear the experience of someone who's had to deal with this sort of thing.

I think you are correct this is a case of libel, which would simply mean there is a case for a law suit against the media showing the libelous statements. Of course they are only libel if they are untrue, but the only solid defense against libel is that the statements aredemonstratably true. So if it is a gray area, such cases can go either way depending on the presentation and personalities involved.
