Can Detroit Win Back California?

Posted March 18, 2011 8:30 AM by CarDomain

If you live in California, you're used to seeing the roads dominated by imports. The domestics have slipped a lot there in the last few decades. According to The Detroit News, "Detroit's automakers sold less than 30 percent of all vehicles in California last year, down from 45 percent in 2004. Nationwide, by comparison, 45.1 percent of all new cars and trucks sold last year were produced by the Big Three."

But GM, Ford and Chrysler are now seeing their market share increase as they introduce smaller, more fuel-efficient cars. California is by far the largest market for the Volt, and Chrysler is expecting the Fiat 500 to do very well there.

Will it be enough to turn the boat around?

I love this topic. But I do have irrational biases. Detroit will win back California:

1. When their VP's of styling and product design have all apprenticed in southern California design studios.

2. When their marketing people stop schmoozing with the car dealership owners from Midwestern cities.

3. When they start making pickup trucks smaller than 3/4 the size of an 18 wheeler.

4. When they offer European turbo diesel technology in small passenger cars AND SMALL PICKUPS.

5. When they realize that California has the highest cost electricity in the nation. (still want a Volt? PG&E says they have a special rate program. I wonder how long that will last).

6. When they understand that California has the highest motor fuel costs and the highest unemployment rate in the continental US and some of the longest commutes and intercity travel distances.

7. When they realize that most of us will need devices that move us efficiently and are rapidly losing interest in expensive living rooms on wheels.

How about when American auto makers decide to make autos in America again? Besides all of the design issues and lack of fuel efficiency, many of the Honda and Toyota drivers I know purchased their cars because they were actually made here. "Detroit" is a misnomer. Thanks to the auto industry, it's just a place where you can buy a house for less than the price of a car...

More importantly do they or anyone else want to win back California?

You know it would be like adopting and opinionated autistic child who has a very limited grasp of reality.

Sure they do! They all want our beer. They're tired of drinking that stuff from Missouri that tastes like Alka Seltzer seasoned with rubbing alcohol.

HEY!! Don't knock our reality. It's our second largest cash crop....... EW

But California is estimated to be around some $50+ billion in debt. You may need to seriously start rethinking what reality you place your cash crops in.
