ET's Asteroid Mining Acitivity Should Be Visible From Earth

Posted March 30, 2011 9:03 AM

From Technology Review RSS Feeds:

It seems inevitable that humankind will eventually have to look further afield for natural resources as we deplete our own planet's supply. There's no shortage estimates that we'll run out of everything from iron to platinum within the next century or so. The obvious place to look for new supplies is the asteroid belt.

Surely not with the naked eye, but with how big a telescope (or remote camera system)?

"If advanced civilisations have mined their asteroid belts, we should be able to see the evidence, argue astronomers"

What, by observing "Green" political demonstrations on the home planet?

Actually, that may be a pretty clever idea. We have been looking for signatures of advanced civilizations using radio and there may well be other forms of evidence than can be considered.

Of course, that's assuming intelligent life exists on Earth in the very first place.

The mining would be possible today but how to bring down the material?

Chunks of 1 Kg each to be decelerated from 15km/s coming down at a rate of one per second? Calculate the energy - it is really big!

Which desert or sea to be the catcher?

How to assure that no damage will be done?

This may be an ultimate cannon.

Stretch your brains - it would be worth while.
