The Engineer's Notebook

The Engineer's Notebook is a shared blog for entries that don't fit into a specific CR4 blog. Topics may range from grammar to physics and could be research or or an individual's thoughts - like you'd jot down in a well-used notebook.

Happy Second Birthday, CR4!

Wow, how time flies. Just a scant two years ago on April 5th, GlobalSpec rolled out a simple community website called CR4 hoping to create a space for engineers and technically minded folks to discuss issues of technology, develop peer relationships, and locate others with the expertise to help them find answers to burning questions. I fondly remember that time when eight posts a day was considered a lot and I knew the user name of everyone on the site. I less fondly remember trying to coax the original out-of-box software platform to do anything, even post daily stories; and wondering whether this site was actually meeting its mission.

Over time the site grew, slowly at first then finding its own gravity. CR4 really took off in September of 2006 when we relaunched the site using a platform of our own design. Today, the site is very robust with hundreds of posts going up every day. We've added an internal message system, industry blogs, user groups and a host of other tools; and there are a lot more to come (all we need is time).

I receive emails every day from users with functionality questions, suggesting challenge questions, asking what CR4 means, or who simply want to thank us for running the site. Of these emails, the thing I am most proud is the number of users who refer to CR4 as "our" site. This comment is not directed at the CR4 Admin, but to everyone who uses the site. That so may CR4 users have embraced this site as "our place" is a sure sign that we are on the right track.

Whether you've been with us from the beginning, joined after the redesign, or just found the site today; thank you for helping to make CR4 "The Engineer's Place for News & Discussion"!

Happy birthday to us all!

- Chris

C'mon, Chris. September '06 was the auspicious date I joined CR4 as little more than a smart-alek GuestPlus. And look at me now! Over 1300 posts and a smart-alek Guru, no less! (You should see my killer electroluminescent safron robes).

Amazing what this forum's done for me! I used to be the shy, quiet type. Now I have gorgeous women at each elbow, drive an Enzo Ferrari, got plenty of bling, and even shower at least once a week. All thanks to CR4.

Levity aside, thanks for starting-up CR4. It's really an awesome site!

(But why four)?

It's simple... the staff were using conference rooms 1, 2, and 3 for the big party to celebrate their success.

Wow...what the Big Baby is this CR4!!!

Lately I found friends in a few more languages beside English.

And read simple practical tips, as well as philosophy disciples from Israel to India... moving Westward

Wow...

Will any others topics join the Society?

I've been hear some time now. I've received a lot of "Answers to burning Questions." I've also demonstrated what an idiot I can be, and hopefully at least once I've helped someone! I now I truly enjoy this site. I read it faithfully. It's my daily news paper. I've also passed it on to numerous co-workers and friends. Thank you for making this site possible, oh and thanks for spell check!

Here's a birthday present to CR4 community. Engineering Design Quotations to ponder and enjoy.

``Science is the study of what Is,
Engineering builds what Will Be.''

``The scientist merely explores
that which exists,
while the engineer creates
what has never existed before.''
Theodore VonKármán, c.a. 1957

I "found" this site late last year. I read quite a bit on it for a while, but, since the topics I am most interested in are the ones I know the least about, I usually keep my mouth shut, and let the big dogs play :)

I enjoy being able to contribute when I can, and want to add my thanks to you, with all the others, for starting such an intriguing, and educational, site!
