Will You Buy Your Gas Springs from Them?

Earlier this year, Kaydon Corporation of Ann Arbor, Michigan announced an agreement to purchase HAHN-Gasfedern GmbH of Aichwald, Germany. Since its incorporation nearly 30 years ago, Kaydon has expanded its portfolio of products from bearings and filters to custom rings, specialty balls, shaft seals, linear deceleration devices, and fuel cleaning systems. The Michigan-based company also makes friction control and velocity control products. In spite of the Great Recession, Kaydon enjoyed a profitable 2009 and 2010, based largely on the strength of sales to customers in the alternative energy and military markets.

Founded four decades ago, Germany's HAHN manufactures gas springs, tension springs, locking springs, dampers, and related products (such as brackets) for shock and vibration control applications. HAHN's line of gas springs appears to be of particular interest to Kaydon, as these devices provide controlled motion and speed for elements, such as doors or lids, that open and close. In expanding its product portfolio once again, Kaydon plans to add its new HAHN holdings to ACE Controls, Inc., part of the company's Velocity Control Products segment
