Do You Want the New Version of SIMATIC?

Posted April 15, 2011 8:30 AM by Steve Melito

Late last month, Siemens unveiled the latest version of its SIMATIC powerrate software for measuring and monitoring energy usage in industrial applications. Version 4.0 is suitable for both SIMATIC-S7-315 industrial controllers and PC-based systems that use SIMATIC WinACRTX 2010. Older versions of Siemens' SIMATIC powerrate software are used in SIMATIC WinCC visualization systems and with the PCS 7 process control system.

Siemens SIMATIC Version 4.0 features a software wizard for complex planning tasks. Users can also choose between a default layout and a configurable workspace. The latest version of the application's management utility is designed to allow Production personnel to manage energy costs from planning to purchasing to payment. An Oracle license is no longer required, and users can opt for Windows Server 2008 and Windows 7.

Like previous versions, SIMATIC Version 4.0 provides energy consumption information from in-feed to load. Energy usage data is collected continuously, allowing Production to reduce unnecessary costs, avoid penalties, and identify the most energy-intensive loads. By optimizing the power supply conditions, companies can lower energy costs and approach power limits more intelligently.

Does your business use SIMATIC software for industrial power management? If so, what's your experience with this product? And what do you think of the new features in Version 4.0?

Seimens has a serious marketing problem here.

There are already several versions of SIMATIC for programming PLCs and as far as I can see, non of them are inter-compatible. HMIs need separate software and in some older instances, a third set of software to make the PLC and HMI softwares talk to each other. To complicate matters, the RS485 leads are also different for each PLC/HMI

I have never been able to find a comprehensive document that details which software and leads are needed for which PLC. As a result we carry several versions for the wide range of products that they lump together under the generic term "S7".

Siemens may gain sales from all this software, but they loose far more in hardware sales because consultants and engineers are reluctant to sort through the morass. I have to integrate Siemens PLCs/HMIs supplied on bought in equipment, but I would never specify Siemens for a complete process line.

If this new software is capable of fully programming all the PLCs, HMIs and Energy Monitors in their range, I will buy it. If not, it just puts them further out on a limb.
