New Condensation Tech Captures Drinkable Water From Diesel Exhaust

Posted April 19, 2011 1:48 PM

From Gizmodo:

We've seen plenty of concepts designed to lessen the physical burden of being a member of the military-Marines using portable renewable power stations, clothing that charges radios and GPS devices. But there's not much being done to address drinking water, one of the heaviest yet most critical battlefield necessities. Now the Oak Ridge National Laboratory might have a solution that can help lessen the weight of water.

"Lessen the weight of water," eh? Good luck.

As in dehydrated water crystals--just add water to get a refreshing drink!

You act surprised; but surely you weren't born yesterday? (Even in cat days/years, whatever the conversion factor.)

The article did not mention how to clean the exhaust upstream of the filter. Membranes, or any sort of dead-end filter, might soon clog with the particulates in diesel exhaust. Same problem with using membranes for carbon capture from flue gas -- the mercury vapor and fly ash remain an unsolved problem.

Potentially very useful.

A new condensation process captures water from burning diesel fuel, and is so efficient that it could theoretically produce a gallon of water from a gallon of diesel, using lightweight materials.

There are a few downsides. One some may not be aware of is the new pseudoscience field this will open up of burning fuel in an internal combustion engine to produce water for an electrolyser to produce electricity to charge up a battery to power an electric motor to move the vehicle. The internal combustion engine also runs an electric generator for extra over unity.

Win, win!
