Seemed like VW had painted themselves into a corner with the car that
appeared in 1998, and obviously, it took them a long time to decide to
attempt a redesign. But what might at first appear to be a mild refresh is in fact a major
overhaul of the icon, which brings it closer to the original Herbie
spirit.
The new car is longer and wider and looks very good in person. I was especially
glad to see a more upright windshield and a dash that isn't so deep. VW
was going for a more masculine look this time - they don't want the
Beetle to just be a woman's car anymore - and I would say they mostly
succeeded.
