We Could Live Without It

Posted May 19, 2011 9:59 AM

A Spring cleaning idea from the Washington Post. The newspaper's editors asked writers to name one thing — an idea, a tradition, a technology — they felt the world would be better off without. The responses range from engagement rings to smartphones. How is it that Reality TV shows missed making the top ten? What would you put on the list?

The preceding article is a "sneak peek" from Mechanical Components, a newsletter from GlobalSpec. To stay up-to-date and informed on industry trends, products, and technologies, subscribe to Mechanical Components today.

I have a few:

Monster-sized SUVs

Blue Tooth earpieces

Texting instead of talking

Genetically modified foods

Full body scans in airports

Heavy metal "music" that's only good for sterilizing frogs at 200 yards.

People of WalMart

The current push to reduce social programs designed to help the needy....what's happening to our compassion?

Dancing With The Stars -- it ain't about dancing anyway. :((

Religious intolerance...including fundamentalism.

There's more....I need to go hug a tree and smile at a flower.

I don't know why an Engagement Ring would be outdated. It is simply a sign of commitment to a relationship. It doesn't have to be expensive, like the one shown in the article unless one has the resources for that.

One of the situations where it might not be worth anything is where a guy and a gal are "playing house" to see if they are compatible, or whatever rationalization they use, by living together. That is getting the cart before the horse and the statistics of divorce show that shacking up isn't at all beneficial to whether a relationship will last or not. In fact it is more harmful to the relationship because sex doesn't help clarify a relationship, it skews the perspective of the couple involved and makes it harder still to learn how to be interdependant together.

The purpose of dating is to see the other person in many different settings over a period of time and you learn much by observation about how that person responds or reacts to those situations.

One of the things we are getting away from in this society is the willingness to be committed to someone, an organization or a cause and to demonstrate it by self-discipline and actions for the betterment of the object of our commitment.

Many of the things listed that we would be better off without or just not needed, has much to do with personal likes and dislikes. They are opinions based upon someones field of experience. There are some things that are out of balance and are detrimental to our society. When people only, or mostly, text rather than picking up the phone or visiting with someone face to face, they miss out on the opportunity and necessity of learning to read others by their voice or body language. There are times when texting is great, but it needs to be used sparingly and not depended upon as the only way to communicate with someone.

Crusty, Curmudgeonly answers to silly questions like this one!

But, then, the WashPotPost (my hometown Newspaper. I live so near Washington, DC, it's the only LOCAL paper of any size running) hasn't ever been a serious NEWSpaper, since Catherine Graham pledged to use it to destroy all conservative presidential candidates.

After all, when a newspaper is your political toy, instead of a news organ, it ISN'T a NEWSpaper.

So, no wonder they missed things like "Reality TV" shows, and a lot of other things that would drive reasonably sane and sensible people nuts.
