Are You a Checklist Person?

Posted June 21, 2011 10:18 AM

Whether it's seven tips to choosing a contractor, critical considerations for designing a CMMS system, or facility improvements that can cut energy costs, many of us organize our lives on paper before we live it at the plant. What is your organization style? Are you a checklist maker or do you fly by the seat of your pants? Do you follow expert step-by-step advice or is your work environment too unpredictable?

The preceding article is a "sneak peek" from Industrial MRO, a newsletter from GlobalSpec. To stay up-to-date and informed on industry trends, products, and technologies, subscribe to Industrial MRO today.

Checklists have their place but are no substitute for thinking. I work in a design contractor for the oil & gas industry and we have checklists to be filled in before the issue of drawings. Whilst this is mainly telling me things I have already done - sometimes there is something on the list that I havent fully considered or forgot was required on this issue. BUT checklists can encourage a tick box mentality and unless people understand the reasons behind the items on the list they will not help the process.

... agreed

but oddly enough, people who 'are thinkers' already have a checkbox 'mentality', and as often as not, are the ones who get tasked to create the checklist in the first place.

the problems arise when those who don't give a damn... start and finish with that kind of thinking.

Hi Chris. Good point. I use check lists more and more, and while they are a often pain in the ass they do prevent errors. But then again I also make the lists, and modify them often by adding new items to deal with unforeseen errors that crop up, or by deleting items that seemed to make sense at the time but in retrospect were a solution to a problem that never seems to occur.

I share your attitude towards a 'check list mentality'. You can check all the boxes and still screw things up. Lists are just tools, and you can't blame your tools for doing a poor job.

I do a comparison in an Excel sheet, noting for each possibility the good and the bad points. I do this for anything more expensive than €100.....

Works great for me personally

PS I LOVE Excel!!!

Another value of a checklist is that it can be saved (archived if you will) and used at a later date. For instance, if an assembly fails or is not working as expected. One can go back and verify that all necessary steps in the check list were followed. Possible modification of the check list (assembly, tuning, calibration procedures) to avoid the same problem in the future. So the process evolves resulting in a better product.

A possible down side is it can also evolve into unnecessary and unproductive steps adding inefficiency.

Good points JB.

Knowledge retention as part of the process documentation.
