The Plate or the Pyramid?

Posted July 08, 2011 6:00 AM

The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) has revised the famous food pyramid, creating instead a plate graphic showing the relative amounts of each food group that people should consume. The new guidelines encourage people to cut down on sodium and replace sugary drinks with water, as well as emphasize portion control. Could the plate affect food processors by actually encouraging people to cut back on sugar and salt? Or are government guidelines an ineffective way to control people's appetites?

More wasted money.

Nobody ever gave a cr*p about the pyramid, and nobody will ever give a cr*p about the plate.

With the one exception being the public school system...............another government controlled entity.

I wonder how long until they start mandating our food choices........................oh, that's right, they have.

To be fair, if you want salt it's easy enough to add it to your food.
People complain that their freedom of choice is being curtailed... but surely kids (and even adults in some situations) are not being given a free choice because nearly all the food available to them is laced with excess sugar salt and fat.
Ok, some of 'em will choose to eat crap anyway.
But in the case of school meals, isn't the school meant to act in loco parentis?
And shouldn't a parent provide balanced meals to kids.

Humans in a natural/wild environment wouldn't have much access to sugar and salt. Possibly scant access to food anyway. The Native American tribes would hunt and gorge on meat with near starvation between hunting forays, but the active lifetyle suited that. Once the white man bought in farming and 'civilised' them, their health deteriorated.
Out of interest it's the bravado, poor food choices and strong constitutions of adolescent males which lead natives to use them to test new food types in case they are poison.
Maybe that's all we are doing to our kids today? Feeding them mass produced crap who's sole aim is proffit for the already wealthy, and see if they survive?

I thought it would be small pox and liquor that exacerbated their demise. Thank god for Casino's, that evens things out.......right?

Sometimes I forget that I/we, as in my family, are different. We very, very rarely go out to eat, don't eat much processed food, etc. I think it's the responsibility of parents not to allow their children to load up on garbage.

I know that doesn't always happen, and I suppose that if the parents refuse, the government will step in. I'm never going to be happy about the government taking over roles that citizens should have the sense to be doing themselves.

For christ sakes, a pie chart.

How bought the (4) four basic food groups. Anyone remember that one, it wasn't that long ago.

Hey, let's come up with a "pizza chart": so many degrees each of crust (carbs); meats (protein); cheese (dairy, fats); peppers, olives, shrooms (veggies); and pineapples, tomatoes (fruit). And just a minute (°/60) sliver of salt (sodium).
