This Build Cost $880K?

Posted July 22, 2011 8:00 AM by CarDomain

We've all gotten in over our heads on projects before and ended up blowing more money than we thought we would. But how do you spend close to a million dollars dressing up a 13-year-old motorcoach to look a little better than it did when it was new?

Where did the money go? Well, the seller of the '98 Mauck in question is kind enough to break it down for us. Somehow, the previous owner managed to blow close to the sticker price of a new Lambo on "LED rope lights" and a cool pop-up table on the roof. Huh? Yeah, and believe it or not, the "upgraded" trans and supercharged V8 collectively set him back over $87K.

More than $100K was blown on upholstery throughout the passenger compartment and drivers' cab. But only a modest $5858 went into "upgraded" wheels and tires, which for all I can tell look like truck steelies wrapped with cheap-and-nasty commercial Hankooks. I guess the little things add up. I mean really add up! But I'm still scratching my head: $880K?

The person that ponied up that cash should seriously consider giving up the booze!

this is seriously beyond the capability of alchol. there must be other stimulants used.

I'm thinking that he installed a dance pole, and the dancers are a permanent feature!

Repack wheel bearings every 6,000 miles?

(repack wheel bearings @ 6,000 miles)

I noticed the same thing. Lessee now: my 2000 Jetta is running the original bearings at all four corners with 218,000 hard miles on the odo, and they have never been repacked, nor will they ever NEED to be repacked. This is common practice in the automotive world today (sealed ball bearings, often twin-row or paired; factory-assembled and good for roughly the life of the car). Surely the Macks and Peterbuilts and such could provide suitable replacements for whatever Mauck used in '98. And the custom shop didn't know about it? Hmmmm . . . yep, I agree with another poster: the owner needs a new best friend! [To help him eliminate the back pain from sitting lopsided on the wallet. That's probably what led to the booze that in turn led to this . . . thing]

If I had US$ 10 million to blow, I suppose I could manage $880,000 for this.
