Awesome Gentleman Builds Homemade Flying Contraption

Posted September 22, 2011 1:07 PM

From Boing Boing:

Local farmer Shu Mansheng starts the engines of his self-designed and homemade flying device before a test flight in front of his house in Dashu village on the outskirts of Wuhan, Hubei province September 21, 2011. The round steel flying device, which cost more than 20,000 yuan ($3,135), is the fifth model made by Shu, a junior middle school graduate. It measures around 5.5 meters (18 feet) in diameter, and is powered by eight motorcycle engines. Shu managed to hover for 10 seconds at about 1 metre (3.3 feet) above ground during a recent test flight. Above, in August, he set up a propeller on the motorcycle engine of his self-designed and made flying device before the first test flight in front of his house. (REUTERS/Jason Lee)

How fast does the whole assembly counter-rotate vis-a-vis the propeller rotation?

He's thought of that already!! He has 4 engines mounted one way and the other 4 the other way! Still, I do like the safety measures he has incorporated into this device like the fine cotton cockpit and the....the....the fine cotton cockpit!!

I think so. Look, in the larger, clearer first picture of the article, at the blade "twist". If all the engines run the same direction with those blades, the "lift" would be half positive, and half negative. I think he's reversed the run direction on half the engines. Doable, but not easy. But that would counteract the torque-spin problem. And it IS the method Kaman used on his meshing-double-rotored helicopter designs. He wasn't the only one, obviously, but his designs were so distinctive they are the first ones I think of in this instance.

A Prime Candidate for the Darwin Awards!

LOL

What, no steel roll cage and a dead man switch?.....only protection for the pilot is a wrap-around cloth barrier of some sort????????? IMO, it's the ultimate Cuisinart PRO......

Yep. Bailing out of that one at least guarantees you won't feel the hard (chute-less) landing.

I wonder if he can kill all the engines from one switch?

But, if he did that, then bailed, he'd probably just fall in the middle of the machine, and they'd all crunch together. Bummer! I HATE it when that happens!

interesting that he's wearing the jacket, considering there are what I think are at least six cooling units visible in the picture, plus a freezer. (and some substandard wiring on the wall of the building in photo #2.)

I also wonder why he chose to angle the bracing on the perimeter rim... is there some torsional force acting there? why not use simple verticals struts, and about half as many. He only needed one ring I think, to support the engines.. the rest is cosmetic... imho.

and what do I have to do to earn "Awesome Gentleman" as a description?

1.- Certain poissoning treatments require you to keep warm.

2.- Because otherwise, it would bend like a flying tortilla.

3.- As per Merriam Webster's definition: "Awesome Gentleman: That one who commits awesome acts of gentleness.

You have to give him credit for the "Trap door" in the floor of his (cotton) cockpit, (not shown)
The carefully designed stress absorbing peripheral struts, and not
least his sheer guts for laughing in the face of danger, as the leg chopping props
rotate all around him. But, fair play he has built one, which is more than I have done!

jt.

While working at home, Pablo Picasso surprised a burglar.
The intruder escaped, but Picasso told the police he could draw a picture of the suspect.
On the basis of his drawing, the police arrested a three eyed woman, Adolph Hitler, and a washing machine...
