Posted September 27, 2011 11:28 AM

From Wired Top Stories:

Ungainly, ugly and slow, the Liberty ship nevertheless becomes the workhorse of the Allied merchant fleet during World War II, thanks to mass production.

I served for a short time on HMS Hartland Point in the 60's, one of the last liberty ships in service with the Royal Navy.

A good well built ship, that rolled a bit when it was rough, but always came through.....

I have been right up to the buoys around this ship several times, also sailed (and motored) past her hundreds of times as we kept out yacht at HMS Pembroke. You learn to live with the possibility.

I was even one of the 4 man crew (two Tugs as power!!) that brought HMS Belfast from Portsmouth up into London and parked her opposite the Tower of London, where she is to this day....One of the few WWII active participant cruisers still around I believe, certainly in Europe.....mainly because after being mined and having her back broken in 1939(?), she spent some years in dry dock being repaired....

When she was part of HMS Belarophon (spelling questionable), I also served on her for a short time.....Great old ship that had been kept fairly up to date right up to being placed in London.

As an aside:- I also served a short time on HMS Andrew, therefore I was Andrew, on the Andrew, in the Andrew!!! (Only ex RNers will probably understand this strange comment!!)

Marked as being off topic.

Bellerophon

I believe - named after Pagasus's rider. There have been a number in the RN's history (inluding a ficticious one on which Richard Bolitho served!)

I'm not RN/ex-RN, but I understand the Andrew-cubed comment... You have some excellent memories to share!

....not all are repeatable though......

Then you know of Andrew Pusser as well, seldom for a Lady!!! I was surprised that Wiki has nothing about him.....
