Del's Apple Juicer

Posted October 09, 2011 8:48 AM by user-deleted-1105

It's a bit late for this year but there are enough apples about to give it a try.
The 'scratter' is a block of oak, gut from a fallen branch and cut round on temporary pivots using the bandsaw.

Stainless steel countersunk head screws are driven into the block protruding about 1/4" to actually grind up the apples. The shaft (12mm stainless steel) and drive is from my old electric golf trolley. The bearings are just holes in the oak lubricated with a bit of olive oil.
It grinds 'em up quite wellwith a little pressing down now and again (could do to be a bit finer) but there's time for some fine tuning. The pic below shows the parts, not coupled together (and a class of juice)

The press is a simple softwood frame and a 'mandraulic' car jack.

It's all a bit rough and ready, but I've tried it out, unfortunately all the apple I could find seem to be desert apples and the juice is incredibly sweet. I shall try and find some crab apples and make a little cider.
I'll then dismantle it, clean it up and put it away for next year.

Very clever. You are quite the craftsman. Thanks for sharing.

Does this mean that you have given up golf?

Yup, gave up in February, it was too hard on my knees elbows and wallet.
I've been spending more time making bows, which is a hobby that pays for itself.
Here's my latest which I made for myself 'Twister' a Yew 'primitive' bow with no fancy heat treatment or recurves. I just worked the wood to accommodate the twist and still draw straight. It's a good 40# at 28" draw and shoots at 167fps (~114mph) which is fast for a 'stick bow', groups like a dream.

Here's a link to a video clip of my human persona shooting it.

I watched the video. Nice.

Have you ever considered making wooden golf clubs?

You might be surprised what some people would pay for a club made by an artist such as yourself.

Not my thing, the bows are very primeval ingrained into our culture from neolithic times and before we could read or write. Gotta be one of mankinds key inventions after harnessing fire. Imagine being the first guy to make one... you can hunt without getting so close that you are in danger of getting eaten.
for us Brits of course there is Agincourt, imagine the air thick with arrows like driven snow. Stirs the blood, cry God for Harry England and St George.

It did change things. It was, at the time, revolutionary.

Here I am coming at you with a golf club and you shoot me at 20 feet. I don't even comprehend why I'm dying.

I just took the time to watch your video for the first time - imagine my shock!

You're British!

Kidding aside, the Bard did you right in the quote later in the thread, surprising enough so did Hollyweird

Update

10/10/2011 12:23 PM

i picked up a load more windfalls including some crab apples. The juice has a much nicer flavour now, not so sweet. I got about 4.5L of juice in a plastic container with an airlock on it, I han't added any chemicals or stuff, lets see if the natural yeasts will work their magic.
I'm sure i could have got more juice, but I didn't want to overstress the press. I have my eye on some square section tube which I've spotted round the back of the factory, I'll have to see if maintenance want it... I'll weld up a frame and get a bottle jack for next year.
I race tuned the scratter a bit adding some stainless nails and reducing the gap between the rooler and the inside face. It chopps 'em finer but could still do with some tweaking. Too many apples and it just spins intil you jam 'em down a bit, oddly, pussing them down to the back works better than pushing them down to the front.
I found a built in safety feature... the bit of 3x2 I was pushing down with hit the roller, it jammed the roller, but the shaft kept spinning. It's just a press fit into the roller with no keying so it acts as a sort of clutch... I planned it all like that very carefully on paper with lots of sums... honest.
Anyhows... I'l let you know how the cider turns out...
It's all being dried out, oiled and put away now.
