What Is It? Blog

What Is It?

What Is It? is a place for engineers to test their knowledge (and sense of humor). Each week (or month, or...) the CR4 team will post an unidentified picture of an object, tool, animal, something. We're looking for your best (or funniest) guesses at what it might be in the comments.

Yes, we take [appropriate] submissions. Send them to cr4admin@ieeeglobalspec.com.

It looks like a very lonely "Rudolf" machine sitting on a green floor with its red tag drooping at having been left behind.

It's not trying to figure out where it should be located to look it's absolute best.

But seriously, it reminds me of a high speed printer from years ago, compressed air in the nozzle on the LH side, box of continuous feed paper located underneath. Usually seen in pairs because it took a technician as long to load a box of paper as it took the printer to unload it.

Is that the legendary continuous Panini machine? I'd like a Reuben with mustard for twelve.

It appears to be a machine for machining dovetail joints on drawer components.

That is a beta model Mark XXIV Light Storage cabinet from LynDoor™ Labs.

Raw light is piped via fiber to the brass fitting visible on the top, and the light is compressed and stored until needed.

This model was never produced; the stored light proved so heavy the legs collapsed... and the objectionable smell while operating was a real problem.

Well what do you suppose it smelled like. Yes, that is exactly what it smelled like, almost as if fresh cow manure were stored instead of light.

We grew some killer tomatoes in that sucker though.

Worked better than my brother's favorite fertilizer, chicken manure.

Looks like a routing machine, or, possibly a guillotine (for paper).

There seems to be an extra set of holes behind the rear "guide" so that it (the rear guide) can be repositioned.
