What Is It? Blog

What Is It?

What Is It? is a place for engineers to test their knowledge (and sense of humor). Each week (or month, or...) the CR4 team will post an unidentified picture of an object, tool, animal, something. We're looking for your best (or funniest) guesses at what it might be in the comments.

Yes, we take [appropriate] submissions. Send them to cr4admin@ieeeglobalspec.com.

OH NO!

The dreaded carnivorous Ficus Benjamina is stalking that poor defenseless miniature zebralope. Why oh why did the engineers not put the protective fence on the other side. Oh well, a shrub has got to eat.

It's a wild mountain pygmy horse, we use them to chase the raccoons out of the orange grove fields here in Florida...The only known natural enemy of the Raccoon this otherwise peaceful beast is a common sight down here in the Sunshine State...

Sorry. I was supposed to take some pictures for this blog yesterday but my plans changed. Since I'm the Animal Science blogger I thought we may as well start with my specialty!

If you don't like the selection feel free to email some images to CR4Editors@globalspec.com

Well it's NOT a "Caption this" installment but a "What Is It" installment - new weekly topic.

Yes, it is a new weekly installment with a completely different title than "Caption This". I'm looking forward to more silly answers to future pictures, too. IMHO we all need more frivolity and silliness to get through our cut and dry lives of engineering. I particularly like the wide open ambiguous title of "What is it?" If CR4 were supposed to only apply the cut and dry standards of our workplace then CR4 should only accept archeology caliber pictures where the focus of the subject is obvious for this installment. I'm looking forward to both real archeology inquires and ambiguous images.

WhAT? That's surely a lost reindeer. ... Actually there seem to be reins on the deer, would you pan the camera up for a second, I believe there's a sleigh in that tree.

It's a tree in front of a fence, with what looks like an okapi in the distance.

SolarEagle, Del the cat, and Randall answered correctly - it's an okapi!

I took this picture at the Jacksonville Zoo a few weeks ago. He/she was walking away and so I couldn't get a good picture.

I politely disagree, I think that this is a great picture. Had this been an unambiguous picture like SolarEagle's there would be little room for frivolity.

Thank you! It seems that people like the creative aspect of guessing as much as trying to figure out exactly what it is. There will be a mix of straightforward and ambiguous pics going forward.
