Senior Citizens Binge Drink Most Often

Posted January 12, 2012 12:52 PM

From Discovery News - Top Stories:

College-aged adults still drink a lot, but Midwesterners and senior citizens can probably drink them all under the table.

Here's the definition:

"*Binge drinking means men drinking 5 or more alcoholic drinks within a short period of time or women drinking 4 or more drinks within a short period of time."

I know a guy who claims not to even have been drinking until he's had at least two beers.

Me, I never drink faster, or more, than I can.

Our resident expert is on hiatus, or we could ask him.

Our resident-expert-on-leave is neither a senior citizen nor a Midwesterner. But I'll wager he has an opinion on this. <oops, gambling problem...>

I just thought we were writing in really small words because binge drinkers try to keep a low profile........................when they're not on a binge anyway.

Doesn't binge drinking imply that you don't do it all the time?

If that's the case, we're not binge drinkers.

Man, I feel better already. Think I'll stop on the way home and have a few.

Be careful! You're venturing into functional alcoholic land.....................a terrible term, dreamed up by the stressed out and jealous. A few beers a day is fine...........................weekends...................it's time to rock!

There are a lot of correlations between alcohol and CR4....................I don't need either one of them, but I like them. A few self imposed time outs once in a while to keep things in perspective never hurts.

I have to agree with that. As I remember it; "binge" was coined to describe Excessive Episodic drinking, with the prime goal of becoming paralytically drunk.

Specifically Pommy 'clubbers' on a Friday night.

5 shots just won't do that and what 'mature age person' bothers what day it is?

These people have it all wrong.

My latest addiction. I've got it streaming onto my front porch. OMG!!! The longer I listen, the better they know me. Cream-Blind Faith-Hendrix-Traffic-Zeppelin-Pink Floyd- Allman Brothers-Jefferson Airplane-The Doors.....................................

How am I supposed to sleep? It's the musical orgy I've been waiting for. I'm a little behind the times. I never knew about things like this until recently.

It's the perfect companion to binge drinking.

Nice................The Who is playing The Seeker. How appropriate.

BTW- The plural of hiatus is not hiati, it's hiatuses..........................these are the vexing problems that binge drinkers work on when everyone else is sleeping.

You're welcome!

Re: Senior Citizens Binge Drink Most Often

Don't be afraid. Last night was a conglomerate of binge drinkers gathered around a fire...................one of which works in the medical department at a federal penitentiary...................a female working at a male prison.

She was talking about how amorous the inmates were towards her, and right off the top my head, I cooked up the "Pap-Smears- For Prisoners", program. That's right.............................scratch and sniff pads that are available for $10-$15 a pop, to remind them of life on the outside. Could be a lucrative deal.

Of course, I told her that I would have to bounce it off my CR4 buddies.

Any thoughts?

As far fetched as this sounds, she also told me that cigarettes sell for $500 a carton.

I'm wondering how federal prisoners can afford these prices, when I'm having a hard time with the prices on the outside. I'm also wondering how I can get cigarettes, both in, and out of my butt without breaking them. Probably not a good idea for a thread though.

You're making me worried. I'm thinking you may be a little too "artistic" yourself. There's a fine line between genius and insanity, you know.

And don't ask me why I sitting here at 3:00 in the morning typing when I should be in bed.

Because you're a genious of course.

Nah. I've always been a little off..................at least according to others. Harmless though.

I think I may have figured out what my current problem is...............I finally got this streaming music on my front porch. Seemed like a good idea. The problem is, now that I've got my favorite music dialed in, I can't sleep. And I'm being snapped around between years and decades like Billy Pilgrim. Might have to disconnect.

Thanks 34, but at $500, I'm wondering if I can get an entire carton up there. I like the vaseline idea. Tomorrow I will practice with a hunk of 2X4 to celebrate Martin Luther King day.

Re: Senior Citizens Binge Drink Most Often

because....

Women absorb and metabolize alcohol differently than men. In general, women have less body water than men of similar body weight, so that women achieve higher concentrations of alcohol in the blood after drinking equivalent amounts of alcohol (5,6). In addition, women appear to eliminate alcohol from the blood faster than men. This finding may be explained by women's higher liver volume per unit lean body mass (7,8), because alcohol is metabolized almost entirely in the liver (9).

From the same source...

"Women's drinking is most common between ages 26 and 34 and among women who are divorced or separated (2). Binge drinking (i.e., consumption of five or more drinks per occasion on 5 or more days in the past month) is most common among women ages 18 to 25 (2). Among racial groups, women's drinking is more prevalent among whites, although black women are more likely to drink heavily (1)."

This clearly states that binge drinking is most common from 18 to 25...

The title is misleading because it suggests that seniors get drunk a lot.

Up here, a person that doesn't have a single drink all week then have just 3 on Saturday night during a social event can be classified as a binge drinker.

I guess I fall into that category. I sometimes like to have a cocktail during the preamble to dinner, a glass of wine with dinner and maybe a liquer with dessert. I don't get polluted.

Re: Senior Citizens Binge Drink Most Often

Gee.............that lasted a long time. I had forgotten that some of our esteemed members had my email address. All I want to know, is where's the 12 step program to break an addiction to a quirky little engineering forum? I take a little leave of absence, and they finally start hitting on my area of expertise.

  • people who binge are not alcoholics
  • Who needs a study? I've been saying this for decades. This is an easy one. Senior citizens remember how to party! They binge drank through the cold war, the Cuban missile crisis, Kennedy's assassination, Vietnam............................if something works, stick with it. Used to be, sneaking into the parents liquor cabinet was a rite of passage. Today's crop sips Jasmine tea and pops antidepressants. The new rite of passage for teenagers is to be diagnosed with ADHD as early as possible, get their brains numbed with pharmaceuticals, and be told that both they, and the world, are perfect. Works great, until someone tweets that they are ugly......................then they suicide.
  • So do yourself a favor. Get off the drugs, fire your therapist, belly up to a bottle of your favorite adult elixir, and drink a minimum of five drinks per session. It ain't always pretty, but you'll be a better person in the long run. Besides, you'll be putting America to work, in our vineyards, breweries, and distilleries. Use the Jasmine tea to clean your toilet. Just don't drive..........................that's really the only firm rule.
