Police Want 'Drive-By' Friskings

Posted January 19, 2012 8:18 AM

From Discovery News - Top Stories:

If you think your privacy feels violated by TSA agents whenever you get randomly selected for a pat down or body scan, well, get ready for this: drive-by friskings by the New York Police Department. NYPD announced this week that they are developing a new portable device to detect concealed weapons or explosives on possible perpetrators. The device uses infrared rays to scan a person's body and provide officers with a digital outline of any concealed weapons.

Here's another recent thread discussing technology enabling a different kind of search

http://cr4.globalspec.com/blogentry/17024/Cell-Search-and-Seizure

in that case the ACLU did a pre-emptive strike, try to get definition of the rules of engagement

these tools will be used, so

either there will be legislation

or the courts will decide after some law enforcement agency pushes the envelope

what is described as activist courts is really a failure of lawmakers to keep up with changing conditions

It just occurred to me, that a weapon could be shaped like anything.

I could see the police being issued a sheet of paper or computer file with a list of shapes that would commonly be under a person's clothing.................keys, wallet, etc., and anything that falls outside those parameters would be considered suspect, and be grounds for a search.

Think of the possibilities...................drugs, drug paraphernalia, knives..................the list goes on.

Time to build more jails and prisons.

Remember the spate of cell phones with 3-5 barrels of .38 caliber built into them that started arriving here a few years back?

What do you suppose one of those would look like to that scan?

Maybe a cell phone? Guess we have to add those to the list of weapon-shapes that we have to arrest people for carrying, too.

Wonder how the police will react when the press publishes me making a phone call on my "weapon"?

Probably pretty badly, given that apologies aren't in their vocabulary, most times.

That's why I don't think they need to be allowed to use this technology for drive-by-frisking. Neither they, nor I, are smart enough to know how to TEMPER the inevitable responses!

I'm not going to worry about it.

Even if these things are implemented, there will be a massive run, on cheap plastic squirt guns and hand grenades....................the police will stop using them after constantly being charged with harrassment, and that will be the end of that.

They probably will be here though. Much like the illegal police roadblock checks down here, the way they circumvent the Constitution, is to first claim it is for safety. With the ultimate goal of making all public spaces, places where being stopped, questioned, and searched, is commonplace.

Many cities are already working toward getting into our homes, under the guise of "safety inspections".

I think New Yorkers will simply accept it as the norm and few people will challenge it in that way.

The only way this will get changed is in the courts.

Probably.

As with many measures like this, it will also probably create a new industry. I'm guessing that it wouldn't be difficult to weave fibers into clothing that would thwart these devices, and cloak anything underneath.

NYC is a funny place to watch.....................from afar.

In their efforts to stomp out smoking, cigarettes are taxed to the point that they cost about $12-$15 a pack.

What they managed to accomplish, is to create a massive criminal enterprise where one didn't exist before.

They are in the process of doing the same with alcohol.

Needless to say..................they also collect zero taxes on products that are bootlegged into the city.

Don't be surprised if we find out that some unscrupulous police officers get caught selling the weapons that they confiscate in the drive by friskings.

Possibly true, but shielding in that way will make the police even MORE suspicious as well as probably extending the range of the scan machine as the target will now be far bigger.

Everyday US customs catch such scams as people try to "hide" guns and drugs in the mail and in their cars......but they still catch them.....there is a good program on US TV called "Border Security" which shows such things....

I believe it can already detect explosives, therefore plastic guns and grenades will not help if true......not even with plastic explosives!!

You are finding a problem that will not exist either way.

For example:-

1) Its a cell phone gun and looks like a cell phone when scanned - will be ignored by the police - sadly.

2) It scans as a cellphone gun - hidden weapon - police will be very interested. Possibly the amounts of lead and explosive charge can be detected by the scanner as it is already able to detect explosives if I remember correctly....normal cell phones don't have large amounts of either lead or explosives....

I cannot for the life of me imagine that someone will be searched JUST because he has a cellphone on him. Though if he has broken the law in some other way, I would imagine that will be used as an excuse to look at a cell phones contents......is being done already I understand....

Best way, never carry a cell phone gun, pen gun or anything similar, in most countries you WILL end up behind bars.....correctly so, the only use is for murder/wounding, not for a Caribou or a Duck shoot.
