About high time! The USN's P-3C Orion fleet is aging not-so-gracefully and long at the tooth....and not so capable anymore.

Hi Capt,

As I understand it, since the PBY Catalina each successive generation of maritime surveillance and reconnaissance aircraft has had a shorter range and a shorter endurance - shorter time on station ........ not something that is publicised....

To me the P-8A seems to be another step backwards in this regard

...jet engined planes will NEVER match the "loiter" times of the older reciprocating, propellor-engined planes.

...our Lockheed EC-121's could stay airborne for up to 20+ hours, with 8,760 gallons of 115/145 AVGAS...something the turboprop P3's couldn't do even when they shut-down two engines and flew only on the other two engines.

...the Navy no longer has "patrol" planes, they just have "jets" (shakes head).
