Pattern Master Wins Million-Dollar Mathematics Prize

Posted March 22, 2012 7:43 AM

From New Scientist - Online News:

Endre Szemerédi has won the Abel prize - he proved that surprisingly ordered patterns can arise from seemingly random actionsImagine I present you with a line of cards labelled 1 through to n, where n is some incredibly large number. I ask you to remove a certain number of cards - which ones you choose is up to you, inevitably leaving ugly random gaps in my carefully ordered sequence. It might seem as if all order must now be lost, but in fact no matter which cards you pick, I can always identify a surprisingly ordered pattern in the numbers that remain.

Isn't that what Fourier Analysis does?

I don't know, but I know those are the paterns of randomness, they're everywhere, even the credits at the end of a movie exhibit some kind of a wave form (except that vertically)...

Every two events of unrelated accidents show a trend, and when it changes, the next events will also show a new trend, untill they change again, an so on...

We could play music with almost everything, or create beatiful images (besides fractals)...

I knew this since I was a kid, where's my million?

If you can prove your work before 1975, then you can claim the honor and prize.

"When Szemerédi proved his theorem in 1975 he also provided mathematicians with a tool known as the Szemerédi regularity lemma, which gives a deeper understanding of large graphs - mathematical objects often used to model networked structures such as the internet."

There are medications that make fixations like that not so concerning.

Now if he really wanted to prove his system works use it to predict what cards I am going to take before I take them!

I kinda-agree ... I admit (after reading, and somewhat contemplating the article) ... I, for one, don't get it.

"... removing a certain number of cards ... inevitably leaves ugly random gaps in my carefully ordered sequence. It might seem as if all order must now be lost, but in fact no matter which cards you pick, I can always identify a surprisingly ordered pattern in the numbers that remain."

And every single/solitary snowflake follows a very distinct pattern-of-generation, too...if you have the time to investigate and document it.

And, if you were (able) to "pluck-out" a few million (or billion) of the galaxies from the known/observable universe, certainly someone would still state that it is "surprisingly ordered".

I trust that "combinatronics" will not soon make its way into Junior High text books.

(he "proved his theorem in 1975"...yet, only NOW being recognized?..."Yep, pretty obscure"...(!)

Patterns are of the mind. Pattern has no meaning outside of what we call perception or consciousness. Observation is inert without being processed by thought. Patterns are relational constructs.

Random is mostly a false notion. In a cause and effect universe, the only reason we call something random is not knowing the "state" of the whole system. In this particular demonstration it is irrelevant as the article explains. The mind is suited to pattern recognition. The cards used are created by the human mind and therefore, I would submit, are predisposed to an underlying pattern potential to begin with. Math is the ultimate pattern recognition concerning physical phenomena.

The article implies that a machine as well as a human could pick which cards to remove.
