'Killer Stainless Steel': New Process

Posted May 31, 2012 8:18 AM

From Phys.org - latest science and technology news stories:

Stainless steel is the icon of cleanliness for home and commercial kitchens, restaurants, hospitals and other settings, but it can collect disease-causing bacteria like other surfaces if not cleaned often. Scientists now are reporting discovery, in the ACS journal Langmuir, of a practical way to make stainless steel that disinfects itself.

On a side note of killer utensils.

Cutting boards are the same way, Plastic cutting boards such as made from the likes such as UHMW hold bacteria, while the old fashion wood cutting boards made from hard maple can more sanitary.

Years ago, I had read that the reason for this was because wood has a natural antiseptic, but this is not the case as this link points out.

Stainless steel is a popular material for door trim. Bacteria on door hardware, in particular the handles, is a constant concern for health care facilities.

This particular problem has had a solution for a while, This press release from one manufacturer explains their available optional antimicrobial coating for door trim. I find it noteworthy that very few design professionals (in the markets I deal with, anyway) specify this for new projects.

These treatments are NOT a substitute for good housekeeping practice!

there was a study done where it involved taking swabs from door handles in public places. It actually quite scary.

Now I have to dig.

Oh yes indeed. Hospitals are glorified germ factories!

You (or your insurance) pay several thousand dollars to become infected with something you didn't have when you went there.

sounds like a sailor on leave.

I dated a girl who was nurse at a retirement/convalescent home, they had an outbreak of a super germ. And the seriousness of it, is that the outbreak was (2) patients.
